I got an estimate on a timing belt replacement that seems really high to me, $500.00. Does anyone know where I can get it done reasonably anywhere around TV? Even Ocala or Leesburg would be OK.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Try:

Meredith's Auto Clinic
Address: 40739 County Road 25, Lady Lake, FL 32159
Phone: (352) 753-1033

CR 25 runs along the East side of the "Historic Villages". 441 to Griffin Ave ( Go East) then North on CR 25 and it's on the left

Just curious what kind of car, 4,6,8 cyl, front wheel drive, miles??? Dealers charge 75-110 & hr for labor. Independents will be less. Probably 5 hours minimum and I don't even know what you have. Oil, antifreeze, new hoses, belts, and water pump too. Doesn't sound out of the realm of reality to me.

That estimate may have included a water pump, belts and some ancillary parts, also. Actually, these items should be changed when the work is done on the timing belt.

I would request an estimate from Tri County Automotive located on CR27.

A guy at work just had the timing belt changed on his kid's Honda Accord. He paid just over $500. This was just to replace the belt and nothing else.

My nephew had the whole motor R&R ed for less than that at SUMTER TIRE.

I have heard anything from $350-500 for a timing belt. And as someone said, if you are doing that you might as well get a price for the water pump since they are in there. It is not an easy job.

Ditto on Meredith Auto Clinic. And $500 sounds reasonable. The estimate for my Chrysler Cirrus was $700. The belt alone costs $89. As a side note: my daughter-in-law was quoted $300 by Grubb's Automotive in Fruitland Park, but the bill was $600 when she went to pick up the car.

Thank you Chuckinca, and to all of you other posters for your helpful suggestions and comments.

I talked with the guys at Meredith's and they made an important discovery - that my car doesn't have a timing belt, it has a chain, which they say does not need to be replaced. Of course I'm thrilled at that news!

The reason for my original question was that I had been told by a friend that I should get it changed, because a timing belt's life-span is about 60-80,000 miles, and my 1999 has just passed that limit. When the timing belt goes, it could happen at an inconvenient time! I didn't want to be stranded on any of my long trips to CA.

So thanks to all who responded, I really appreciate your help!

You're welcome PJ! Glad it work out.
