Coprophagia (Eating Feces) | ASPCA (http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/virtual-pet-behaviorist/dog-behavior/coprophagia-eating-feces)

Our new dog Beau often does this or he did. I try to follow him around when at Doggie Doo Run Run as well as on walks. It is boon probably to people who would complain about Beau's poop on their yards, I have to get it up ASAP or he eats it. And, that means I have to get as much as I can see.

Hopefully, he will grow out of this coprophagia. He only eats his poop and this is only when it is fresh as far as I know.

Anyone else had a dog that gobbled its poop? How did you get him or her to stop. I know of some people at DDRR who have dogs who do this who carry pepper or something like that which stops their dogs from munching poo. These dogs will eat any dog's feces, however, not just their own.

I believe your vet can probably give you something to add to his food that will make the feces less attractive. Most pups will grow out of it.

One of the sites I checked said pineapple creates poop that dogs do not want to eat. But, how do you get a dog to eat pineapple? Some sites do not even think it works-- http://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/its-me-or-the-dog/training-tips/dog-eats-poop.htm

Many people have tried many different so called remedies. On some dogs pineapple works. My dogs don't eat poop but do love pineapple. They have pills like For-bid you can buy that some say work, some say don't. Some people say they grow out of it. I had a puppy once that did grow out of it. The problem is that all dogs are individual and not everything works on every dog. Cleaning up right away is a great idea as well as teaching your new boy the "leave it" command. Are you feeding a good quality dog food, not a supermarket type dog food? If he's not getting really good nutrition he may be looking for something he is lacking, especially since he is a recent rescue. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck with this issue. Be glad it's not EVERY dog's poop.

Taltarzac, There is a specific product for this problem. Our beagle, as a puppy, started doing this and the product (the name escapes me) was available at Petco (back north - should be here.) I mixed a half tablet in some small turkey breast and it worked like a gem. Used only a few tablets. No reoccurrence in five years.

I knew there was a remedy that my dog loving friends talked about but I couldn't remember. That's it!

I had a rescued dog that had been cruelly staked out the first 2 years of its life. Needless to say she was in bad shape when we adopted her. The poop eating issue was her way of not starving . Rescued dogs may have this issue because of their ill treatment and need for nutrients of any kind.
Do not know if this is the issue for puppies. Perhaps some pups did not get enough food from mommy or some were crated or puppy mill, just a thought in response .

The vet can give you something. If you have two dogs, however, you need to give it to both. Once the dog outgrows it, you can desist from putting it in the food. But until that time, you don't want to take him to places where doggie doo is abundant.
