My wife will not go, ever. I am 69 and I'm going alone or with another male traveler. She approves. Leaving early November for 7 day one person tour (or two). Have itinerary and costs. Airline about $1,100 (as of today). Tour $2,300. Each pays own way. Am healthy and live in Hadley.

Will email itinerary if you are interested.

If interested call 916-813-6848 or mdonaldr@reighley.net. Don

I would suggest buying Kidnap and Ransom insurance before leaving.

WHY would anyone go to such an unsettled and anti-American nation at this time in history?

The U.S. Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the risks of traveling to Egypt due to continuing political and social unrest.

"On February 16, 2014 a bomb was detonated on a tourist bus, killing four persons ....."

Egypt Travel Alert (http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/alertswarnings/egypt-travel-alert.html)

Maybe seeing Egypt is worth the risk to OP. To criticize and make fun of his dream is downright nasty. I can understand some gentle warnings, but not the comments that were made here. Given that his wife refuses to go shows that they both are well aware of the risks but some dreams are worth the risks.

Don, I hope you find someone to go with you. Do be careful and have a wonderful time.

OMG,,, trip of a lifetime. If I had the money, I'd go with you. I'll dress as a guy, LOL.

My friend just did that trip and his pictures were awesome. I hope you find someone to go with you, don't let it pass you bye.

Good luck and post pictures of your trip on here so we can all appreciate them.

I agree with KathieI and Redwitch, OP. I think that you should go. The Egyptian pyramids and The Sphinx have been on my wish to see list since I was seven years old.

I met a woman recently at The Civil Discourse Club who had just returned from Egypt. She said the trip was fabulous and admitted that one had to be cautious.

If you can't encourage the OP just pass the thread by!

I spend a lot of time in the Middle East for work. Egypt has always been one of my favorite places. The vast majority of the Egyptian people are very friendly and love the Americans. Unfortunately, that isn't newsworthy.

You must be careful, know where you are and what is going on around you. I was there the weekend of the Arab Spring a few years ago, during the original protests. We just stayed away from the square and actually left the country the following Monday. But never felt personally in danger.

I have always felt safe walking the streets, and market place in Cairo on my own. Probably would not do that now.

Enjoy your visit. The pyramids, and ruins are thought provoking. Especially if you have seen the pyramids and Mayan ruins in Mexico and Belize. The similarities are eerie.

But do be careful and don't draw attention to yourself with open display of who you are and where you are from.

Who, pray tell, criticized or made fun of his dream?

I expressed valid concerns based upon my experience in having been to over twenty foreign countries in various conditions of upheaval, and I provided a direct quote from the Department of State Traveler's Warning for Egypt and provided a link to that warning. Anyone going abroad should read the State Department briefing for the destination country no matter how benign the country might seem.

The tongue-in-cheek reference to kidnap and ransom insurance made by another poster was an oblique way of saying that going is not a good idea.

The de Nile pun by another poster was just that: a cute pun.

None of us told the OP not to go. I posed a question, WHY go during a period of anti-American upheaval? The OP hasn't answered that question.

You people who are urging the OP to go should stop and think how you are going to feel if something untoward happens to him. Urging him to go is just as inappropriate as advising him not to go.

Egypt is one of the most fascinating places that we have ever seen. Being inside the pyramids is just amazing. I hope you have a great trip. Please post more of the itinerary. I would love to know where in Egypt you will be visiting.

our oldest son expertise is in before Christ DNA..so he has traveled to Egypt for many years. reads writes and speaks the language. His travels takes him not only the commercial sites but way off the beaten path. He is blond and blue eyed, colors his hair dark and wears brown contacts and dresses like a local when working in Eqypt. With each trip he has been more concerned about the unrest in the daily life there. This will be the first year he will pass on going to Egypt. And will rethink returning the following year if things become more stable. As he has always said Egypt is the most breath taking out of all the places he travels, but he will head to another country this year..He is 45 and has no children to worry about, so that does not come into his decision at this time
