Once again, I'm surprised that none of the TOTV peeps posted anything about the health department's shutdown of the Colony McDonalds yesterday.
First I've heard about it. That is shocking for a company that built it's empire on quality control. I remember a story about the early days of McDonalds when Ray Krok walked into a store of a new franchisee and saw a dead fly on the windowsill and pulled his franchise rights. But there could be many reasons for a health department shutdown. If a pipe breaks leaving the restaurant without potable water, that could cause a shutdown. Do you know the exact reasons for the shutdown?

Oh my goodness! Among the violations for cockroaches and flies was an employee washing his hands with his gloves on. Sounds like a major management and training issue.
It's a major management issue! I will never go there again.

Most of it is pretty minor, common violations. I'd say the biggies were the live roaches and the flies. Does sound like better training is needed. Hope it opens again soon. Mickey D is not my kind of place but the employees need the job and TV needs some sort of a fast food place at this end (no matter what the opinion is by some).

We drove by there on the way to the vet yesterday. There was an old sedan parked between two cones, blocking the entrance. My husband thought it was broken down, but I thought it was there on purpose to block the driveway. Question answered. Yuck.

Looks like some restaurant manager has some explaining to do to McDonalds Corporate. They'll fix it. I'll go back when they do. It won't take long. Let's make sure we post a link to the follow up report from the Health Department.

Not to minimize the seriousness of the violations, but in the prior six inspections, this McDonalds has had an average of 6 violations, with the highest number of violations in a single inspection being 9. Sounds like this inspection is the exception and not the rule, and that failure mightbe primarily due to a new manager who might not be qualified for the job or simply failed to properly do their job!
Anyway, the 13 violations cited are not all that unusual for The Villages. You might be surprised on the number for some restaurants. If you go to the link below you will find a list of several restaurants in just Sumter Co that have had more, even up to 40 violations in one restaurant. I would guess that the reason this McDonalds was closed down, whereas others weren't, is because of the unusually high number of violations that were more serious than the basic violations (6 of the 13) along with the critical nature in a few of those 6 violations.
We live near this McDonalds but we don't frequently get food from there. Would I have a problem with going there for food after this closure? Judging by past inspections and comparing with other restaurants in the area, I'd have to say I wouldn't have a problem Besides, when they reopen they'll probably be the safest place to go... for at least a while anyway!

Your right Bonny, it was highjacked. Regarding McD's, the place was probably closed by management and corporate. Not by the health department. You would have seen signs from the health dept. that they were closed. Didn't see any signs or yellow tape. Having worked for McD's in the past and how they control the stores I am not surprised. But you will probably find new management and an extremely clean store once they reopen.

I was there a couple of nights ago and was disgusted. As the burgers were made and put into the holding bin, a worker was reopening them and looking through the burger to see what it had on it. She had no gloves on and was working the window and the front counter as well. Also I received my fish sandwich and the grease was obviously dirty that it was cooked in. As I bit into my sandwich I noted the fish was not even warm inside. I took it back up and exchanged it for a burger. Don't say I should have told the manager as it was the manager who was doing this. In the past I've gone to restaurants right after they have been shut down by the health department. Once they reopen they do it all right normally and usually the restaurant is clean. Next stop for the health department is the Burger King on 466. We were there last week and the exhaust fans wern't working and they were still serving food. The restaurant was so filled with smoke you could hardly see.
UPDATE: A few weeks later this McDonald's has reopened and looks very clean and the staff looks very efficient. The food was served hot, the french fry grease clean and I enjoyed my meal. Will go back.

Called and complained to McDonalds HQ about 5 years ago regarding how dirty and fifthly the MCD's was on 44. They took information and apologized and about a day later the owner called....after explaining how dirty his unit was he started to argue that it was rush time etc. I explained to him that it was not, in fact it was 2:30 PM and the employees were too interested in talking to themselves than cleaning up the place. Quite frankly, after talking to the owner I knew his stores would always be dirty and not well managed. He sets the bar. He sets the standards. We just don't have to accept his "low" standards....I have never heard a MCD's closed as a result of health issues...this I guess does not surprise me.

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation (the licensing entity of the State), shut them down for quite a few violations, not management. The inspection report is online.

This is one of the busiest McDonald's I personally have seen. Apparently too busy to follow clean health practices. The other thing I have observed that this McDonald's appeared to have a difficult time keeping employees.
This is a franchise restaurant not company owned. They own several in this area.
I suspect that "heads will roll" and like Skyguy said, it will be a very safe place to go. By the way, very good coffee. Bottom line, they very much need some competion in this area of TV. :icon_hungry:

when I was 15 I worked at mickeydees in ocala and we always knew when the inspectors were coming, insider info, maybe, but the manager always knew and we made the place shine.....that day anyway...
I personnally think that almost every restaurant has had some/most of these violations, this particular mc donalds will probably be the cleanest from now on.......

I everyone has read the comments, I notice no one has really mentioned the owner. Everything I've read revolves around the employees, but particularly the manager.
Soooooo . . . where the hell is the owner??? Does he/she ever show up? THAT is where the blame should be placed. If the owner took more interest in what was really going on, there wouldn't be so many issues.

If you boycotted every restaurant in TV that Occasionaly had a bug issue, you would be eating at home all of the time. It's more common than you would believe.
Thanks to the Health Department for their work----proves all government isn't bad! This is not the first nor the last restaurant in TV with a bug issue or poorly trained employees on proper food handling. The important thing is to get the issue or issues resolved. :icon_hungry:

You can find out exactly the violations by clicking on the exclamation point next to the Restaurants name. Some violations could be for inadequate food temperatures as well as vents that do not work properly, among other things. It is the vermin & roaches I am not happy about.

As a Fast Food operations guy for over 35 years with MAJOR chains managing over 60 restaurants (including McDs) I can assure you that MOST of these infractions listed are basic and can be found in most EVERY FOOD ESTABLISHMENT YOU CURRENTLY EAT AT! Don't be "dooped" into thinking because some of these infractions are not listed on other businesses reports that they are not present there! The issue here is the NUMBER of infractions noted on one visit. In all my years in the food business (last 35 years Fast Food) when something like this has happened it has been because the General Manager has "****ed off" the inspector OR the inspector is a NEW INSPECTOR "fresh out of Health Inspector school" trying to "Make their mark"! I have seen this MANY, MANY times. The inspectors are OFTEN not calibrated and could lead to inspections like this. The Health Dept. may also be trying to make a statement here as well if McDs has not been fixing previously noted issues (previous scores and items unknown). Being in the business and knowing the health code myself I can go to MOST ANY restaurant and develop an infraction list similar to the one kitty has posted above. Obviously there is a management and training issue here BUT keep in mind that the playing field is NOT LEVEL when it comes to Health Department Inspectors and the report DOES NOT tell the whole story. Be cautious to condemn. Read each infraction Line by Line and decide which ones are REALLY an issue that matters. The basics are listed as Basic for a reason: They are common infractions and do not threaten public health typically.
The 4 listed as High Priority are the ones to be concerned about. Flies in the kitchen - but if the restaurant has doors that open (all do) at times their will be flies present. Yes the Pest Control is obviously not effective based on the # of roaches found but will be a pretty easy fix and I'm confident will be fixed. Washing hands with gloves on is obviously wrong and a internal training issue that I am sure will be dealt with. The Fast food industry has some of the BEST guidelines and procedures to be found anywhere in the food industry. The small "Mom and Pop" restaurants are typically much more "loosey goosey" regarding following Health Dept. guidelines so sometimes the posted score does not tell the whole story and may give you a False sense of security.

Two shows I sometimes watch on television are "Restaurant Impossible" and "Bar Rescue". They both deal with failing restaurants or bars that call in a consultant to help them fix their businesses. The terrible and gross things that are in the kitchens on those shows far exceeds anything I read about in McDonalds. In some shows, the consultant has gone into the business and immediately kicked all the customers out and shut down the restaurant or bar until it could be fumigated, cleaned, and the personnel retrained in proper food handling procedures. Yet, these places had gone on for years without the health department shutting them down. We seem to complain about government regulations (and enforcement of those regulations) hurting business, and then we are amazed when businesses take shortcuts to cut costs and improve profits. The owner of this Mcd's fixed the problem right away as soon as it startied costing him money and lots of bad publicity. Restaurants are tough businesses. Most of them fail. But when someone opens a restaurant they have a first obligation to follow all rules to protect the public health, no matter how inconvenient it may be.

It is easy to find a clean McDonalds or any other eating establishment that you can see the cooking/food prep area.
Also remember that when you ask for the McDonalds manager you are getting someone who is a couple of dollars above the rest of the gang.
Places like Colony McDonalds, there is no excuse for what was found. Derelict and incompetent owner and manager.
Just like there is no secret to having a successful restaurant there is most assuredly no secret to keeping the place clean......NONE!!!
As for them being busy again after the fact....just shows convenience is the priority over cleanliness!

If you were to waste some time and go back into my past posts you'd see that I ripped the MCD's at Colony in the past.
It is beyond words and without a doubt the laziest, most incompetent group of people I've ever seen.
I recall writing about waiting for 20 minutes for two burgers and the place was empty with fifteen workers on the other side of the counter.
Good! They should knock it down and salt the earth around it.
But then again maybe we should just give them 15.00 an hour.
