I am amazed how recklessly people drive golf carts. Now before you beat me up I drive one also. People turn left in front of traffic which means if they are hit turning left I think they would be at fault. The worst place is south bound on Morse Blvd at the gate by 466. It just amazes me why people in carts feel they have the right of way there and pull out in front of cars. I would be afraid to do that. But I guess thats the way it goes.

My pet peeve is when these idiots are on the golf cart paths and get out and try to pass you when a blind turn is coming up and their forward sightline is limited. Many times I had to slam on my brakes to avoid getting side swiped as they cut in recklessly in front of me or to avoid a head on collision.

Patience is not one of the virtues that most golf cart drivers possess. For that matter, many seniors in general don't have patience. Somehow we have "earned" and are entitled because?

Guess who comes up on the "short end"----the car or the golf cart in a crash!

I agree JustJim! Many seniors have short fuses instead of enjoying the lifestyle here in The Villages.

I rented a golf cart from The Villages Yamaha Store for two friends of ours who were visiting for a couple of days. I GPS'ed the cart and top speed was just under 18MPH. My friends were given the finger and told to "F" off. So much for Florida's Friendliest Town.

Another one of my pet peeves is when someone is trying to pass me out when his golf cart's top speed is 1 MPH faster than mine. Actually, it is not a pet peeve, just a source of amusement when he is in the car lane for a half a mile struggling to get around me, and his blood pressure is of the charts, only to get to the town square 3-5 seconds faster than me. The people that are getting upset are those driving cars that are backed up behind him waiting for Speedy to get out of the way.

How slow is too slow?

Hi Indy: Intelligent question. I suspect one answer is if you can look back and see a long line of carts backing up.

I also believe too slow can mean from 0 to 13mph. from 14- 16 iffy from 17 to 20 mph perfecto and from 20+ too fast:D

I also get a kick out of people who say "why are you in a hurry.....your retired?

My preference is to say got to get busy with living

By the way 36% of people polled feel they are above average intelligence and that worldwide. I include myself in the 36%:D

Finally the only time real slow drivers cause me concern is if they are on a highway IN THE LEFT TRAVELING LANE AND GOING UNDER 20 MILES LESS THAN THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT....MOVE OVER MOVE OVER

I agree, I'm not going to drive fast because you're in a hurry to go nowhere. If you want to go 35, drive your car and you can go 65

I thought it was us snowbirds that were the bad drivers....

On the multimodal roads, I regularly come across golf carts doing 30 mph, that I cannot pass without going over the speed limit, interesting...........Also, I have seen about 5% of the golf cart drivers taking short cuts where they make a left before the normal posted left. This places the golf cart in the opposing lane of traffic for an extended period of time, and since this is just at a village entrance, the automobile drive has very limited view and is accelerating. I am sure I will be dialing 911 one of these days to report the accident.

That could be me. I am in no rush. But I do go to max speed when I see some one behind me. But I do stop at the stop signs and I realize that slows down those in a hurry.

Happened to me this AM, George, on the MM path adjacent to El Camino Real. I was maxed out at 19.6 MPH and a guy behind me was passing me at a slightly faster speed and a curve ahead. Cart coming the other way forced the S A passing me to cut me off. Fortunately I braked in time to avoid a nasty situation.

It's funny (actually sad), how this site and related posts can make newbies and potential newbies feel bad and unwelcome.

Unfortunate.

When you first noticed the cart trying to pass you, why didn't you slow down and this would have avoided the situation where you had to brake hard to avoid a collision. There was really no reason that you would have kept going at your max speed until the last seconds.

There are bad drivers everywhere, be they in carts or cars. Just yesterday I was driving my cart in the cart lane on Southern Trace when a car (not cart) zoomed up behind me IN THE CART LANE. Coward that I am, I turned into a side street and let the car go by. Good news is, it's much easier driving here -car or cart - than in South Florida.

You are right. New Villagers and potential new Villagers need to be aware that here are dangers in driving golf carts as there are with cars. While any accident on a golf car is unfortunate, they are the small percentage. Most Villagers reside here for years, drive their golf cart with no problem.

I agree that is so sad that the negatives are so headlined...I suppose it makes some feel better for some reason.

If you just treat the golf carts as a car and remain viligant as you would in a car, you will be fine....and that vigilance pertains also to alcohol consumption which is so much involved.

Buggyone, where did I say I "had to brake hard" and "kept going at max speed until the last seconds"?

I didn't have to "brake hard". I did 'slow down" and a collision was avoided by my actions. If you had been there you would understand.

Why can't you accept my post without inserting your own words then chastising me and putting me in a negative position? (I think I know the answer but it would be interesting to hear your answer.)

Most golf carts that have speedometers installed will read in tenths of a MPH. So when the poster stated that he was going 19.6 that is what showed on his speedometer. My cart maxes out at 22.5 and I still get passed out by the hot rod carts.

In your post, you stated you were driving maxed out at 19.6 mph and another cart passed you going slightly faster. You said that it was on a curve and another cart was coming and the driver cut in front of you.

It sounded to me as though you did not slow down immediately upon seeing the other driver start to pass you. If that is not how it occured, my apology.
