Advice Needed: Plants and Plantation Shutters

Mom and I are only here for another week and I need some advice!!

Plantation Shutters: One of the bedroom windows in our Iris faces south and gets a lot of sun. All my windows have blinds but the problem is the eyebrow window. I'm considered putting either a plantation shutter on the entire window or a film on the eyebrow portion of that window. I'm leaning towards the shutter. I talked to Village Custom Interiors yesterday but was wondering if there was anyone else you would recommend. I liked their 3 1/2" Alba Shutters but would like something to compare it too. I know about 48 Hour Blinds but not sure if he would take the time to do just one window.

Plants: My property manager told me yesterday that our renters would like some plants. I'm only in TV about 4 weeks a year so i need easy maintenance! Is there a company you would recommend for a a few plants (like Knockout Roses and Hibiscus) and possibly do a brick wall around the planting area.

Marilyn, I would recommend against 48 hour. for reasons you may pm. I used Village Interiors and am happy with their work. You may choose from a few styles of shutter for the eyebrow. there's one that looks like a sunburst that gives the eyebrow a nice touch...for a price, of course!

I would be surprised if you can find a landscaper who will be able to do a job for you within a week. Also, you will not be around to make sure the plants get the adequate care and water so necessary after they are first put in. Maybe some planters that they could water and maintain themselves might satisfy your renters. I have geraniums all over the place. Most are over a year old, and one on the lanai is two years old and at 3' x3' is about to take over the lanai.

In a pinch, you can always fill that window arch with a large, opaque oriental paper fan or purchase temporary paper blinds (Home Depot) and fasten them into a sunburst shape, cutting to an exact fit the window. (they can be doubled, or lightly spray painted for more opacity.) They come with sticky tape, and push pins will do a great job of securing them too.

Shutters of that kind are a custom order- $$$ - and you will not be able to get them made and installed quickly.

I agree with CFrance on the plants. New landscaping will take time to arrange
and will require immediate and continual care, or your investment will be wasted.
It might be best to wait until you decide what you really want for long term, when YOU get to live here full time.

I would encourage the renters to feel it is allowable for them to purchase a pre-planted container or two for their enjoyment on the lanai.

Places such as Home Depot have them readily available and they are not outrageously priced. You might provide an inexpensive watering can!
A personal investment of $20-40 will encourage them to take care of the planters and they will get to choose what THEY like. :)

So, I'm concentrating on plantation shutters on this trip!

As a renter I would not care if you had plants.

I used the company next to Bargains and Treasures for my shutters. Great job, price and all went well. Very happy with results.

Marilyn, when you get ready to do plants, talk to me. I've been doing a lot of research on the subject. Hibiscus, for example is irresistible eye candy, until there is a hard freeze, which happens every few years, and hibiscus will be nipped or die. There are regulations about fences....etc.
