Publix gift to united way

Little article in the sun today that between employees and publix match, they gave $849,000 to united way of sumter-lake counties. They do help in time of need in our area, even to villages residents who some actually live check to check. Not everyone cash flush as some people actually beleive.

Bogie Shooter, how about this website? United Way salary for CEO is similar to the other site. If the CEO makes this amount, how much are they spending on all of their "executives." If you think they are reputable, please continue to support them. I am simply voicing an opinion.

I think the point of the OP was the amazing amount given. While I too have my doubts about United Way, I still think it's wonderful that so much money was donated.

m1tv: My mother was captain year after year when United Way was called Community chest. I too was a big supporter until companies made it a political thing trying to outdo everyone. it got so bad in our organization that if a manager did not give what the company viewed as generous it went against their record for promotion. I was in HRD and had managers coming to me indicating that they were told to give X % which was well over any raise they had ever received. All so the guy at the top would be in line for a bigger promotion. I called our legal department for fear of a lawsuit and all they could do is say was a Schultz's "I see nothing" The straw that broke the camels back was in fact the disclosure on United Way salaries. My charity is St. Jude's and my donation are send directly to them without a middle man

I believe in charity but I also believe that many charities are mismanaged

rubicon, I experienced the same when I was in banking industry except I was threatened with termination if I did not contribute the full % they wanted. I also agree with you that St. Jude's is a wonderful charity and giving direct is the way to go. I was not trying to create an uproar, I simply think there is a lot of wasted charity money out there in executive salaries.

United Way campaigns are conducted by locally run locally managed organizations with the great majority of the funds distributed in the local community. The National Office, which is where the salarries of which you speak are paid, receives a fee of 1 percent of the annual campaign. For this they provide advertising and other consulting and admin assistance.

I have heard this excuse for not participating many times. Hmmmmmmmm

We switched to Public after they made a small donation to a fund raiser and our old market would not. Has to be hard to handle all the requests they must get for contributions and keep their prices competitive.

Publix is often generous in our local Rotary Projects . They have contributed many thousands of dollars to our projects to provide for those in need.

For a couple of years it was my job at work to shake down the employees in my district to contribute to the United Way. This was a job I found distasteful and I never made my targets. Finally I was relieved of this task and fortunately my lack of accomplishment wasn't held against me. Later, when I learned the salary of the head honcho, I took the United Way off my list. My contributions haven't declined but have actually increased, but I make sure they go to an organization which spends the least on their administrators and the most on their clients. Just a thought from a longtime volunteer with different organizations....money is great and certainly necessary but workers are always needed. One food pantry where I worked actually had plenty of monetary donations but really struggled getting workers to serve the community. This lead to overwork and burnout of the workers they did have. Sorry for the hijack.

At my place of work in Toledo, Ohio, the United Way would give us cards with the expected donation they wanted from us. The head of our HR department kept careful track of who did and did not contribute, and pressure was placed on those who did not contribute because the people running it wanted 100% participation. I always refused to give on principle and would give anonymously to charities of my choice. While I believe the UW does good work, I cannot support their high pressure fund raising.

We kinda had the same thing where I worked, the pressure to contribute. We even "loaned" an employee to the local organization to "help" run the campaigns. Imagine my disbelief when I was told that the employees running the campaign had first pick of all (new, good label) clothing donated for the needy. That led me to assume the perks didn't stop there. Like you, Barry, I had always contributed to charities of MY choice, NOT my employers and learning this after many, many years of pressure just made me feel more justified in my choices.

This thread started out as what Publix donated to United Way and the good they try to do. Is there really any reason to be bashing the United Way because you do not like the salary of the top persons or how your old company handled the contributions? Let's keep it on track folks.

Some people will always look for a negative in a posative. I think for the majority of people including publix employees, they give you a card, you fill in the amount, and thats it.

No excuses, just prefer to give to the charities of my choice that do not pay exorbitant salaries...they do exist.

From 1965 till 1980 I was a division manager for Sears. They made it pretty clear that you MUST donate to United Way in order for that store to get 100% participation and the manager to get his plaque every year.
