View Full Version : Red Fish Run has a Bad Stench

Red Fish Run Golf Course has been closed for the past two weeks for maintenance. Yesterday they applied Sludge, a high nitrogen fertilizer to the course. The course stinks so bad that we can't go out on the lanai or do any gardening. Already called course folks about it and talked to neighbors. Other folks have also called course people about the smell.
Any of you "experts" out there have experience with the duration of the stench from your experience? Ninety degree temperatures with no rain on a Holiday weekend, this smell is not going away!
Before any folks make comments about the living on a golf course and dealing with ......., we have lived here for three years....never had this problem before.

It seems only logical that if you elect to have a home on or near a golf course you must expect to enjoy the many aspects of such an environment including: noisy, smelly gas golf carts, smelly grass treatments including insecticides and fertilizers, stray golf balls in yard or on roof, cussing golfers, fish kills in ponds, large flocks of pelicans in the pond, smelly re-cycled water in the ponds. So enjoy the view and pay down your bond.

Marigold - It comes with the territory. Be grateful that they have not had to maintain the course in that way for the years you have been there. Perhaps you will have another 3 yrs of nitrogen-free odor in the future. Sorry I cannot tell you how long the inconvenience will last - am not an "expert" on same.

Yes, I enjoy living on a golf course. The brilliant sunsets over the water are almost unbelievable in their beauty. The sounds that I hear are water birds calling to each other, song birds singing and frogs announcing the arrival of dusk. The ducks are the clowns chasing each other around while the backs of the shore resting turtles glisten in the sunshine. The golfers drive by with an occasional wave as I sit on my lanai enjoying the show. Yes, there are what I consider minor inconveniences but life is what you make it and I want to make the most of mine.

Future responders....kindly keep your comments SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE USE OF SLUDGE AND YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE POSSIBLE TIMEFRAME OF THE DISSIPATION OF THE ODOR. We know that there are others out there who currently live on or previously have lived on golf courses and might be more familiar with this product.
We love living on the golf course, etc. Know all about the birds, frogs, lawn mowers, golfers...etc. Just keep with the original request for information only.
Thank you

marigold - I envy you living on the golf course - think it would be awesome to have a view like that - some people suffer from sour grapes I'm afraid.
If they are irrigating the course I believe the smell will go away in a short time. Let me be the first to thank you for putting up with it so the next time I play Red Fish the conditions will undoubtedly be improved.

I live off triggerfish and the smell was quite bad by my home yesterday evening, and I'm not on the golf course. Today it is already much less noticeable, in fact it is almost gone. Hope it is better for you too. Sorry for all the nuts that couldn't answer a simple question without having to expound on their personal philosophy. For anyone that has lived in farm country, it's a familiar smell, twice a year.

Perhaps your best source of information would be Todd Basso who is the head of golf course operations. Todd.Basso@thevillages.com
He is very responsive and if he does not know an answer will forward your concern to someone who can answer. Alternatively contact the Cane Garden Country Club at 751-7029 as they manage Red Fish. Google does not identify a product named Sludge rather it seems to be a generic term for treated human and animal waste. If you had a manufacturer name you could contact the manufacturer for information on odor duration. Last year they used what I was told was a turkey waste pellet product on Evans Prairie which smelled in the heat of the summer for less than one week.

Marigold:
Our home is located on a golf course and after living here for nearly 8 years we have never experienced "a stench" resulting from course maintenance.
Secondly, the "that is what you get for buying on a golf course digs" is one of the reasons I never tell people that I live on a golf course.
Thirdly, I do know that sludge is a byproduct of the recycling water plants strategically located throughout The Villages but I was unaware that they were applying the sludge here as i was told it was being sold off site??????
As one poster suggested you may want to alert the course supervisor as i found these folks to be very accomodating

Marigold, I agree with your response. The tacky comments were uncalled for and did not address your question. Did I note a little bit of jealousy? And no, I don't live on a golf course.
