We are thinking about doing something with the floor in our lanai. Any suggestions? We were thinking of pavers but want to know what others have used and are happy with.

We went with tile several years ago but it is hard to keep clean. We are thinking of having Trex installed over the tile. Has anyone done this?

We tiled our lanai. Very pleased with the result. Easy to clean, comfortable underfoot. Here's a short video of the installation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaMoq6yKhic

Good video
Thanks.

If one does NOT enclose the lanai, does the tile become too slippery?
What is the disadvantage of pavers in such lanai?

Please chine in.

We tiled ours too, and also love it. We wanted something Spanish-looking to match the mediterranean style of our house and give a little color. Our tiler found this terrific textured tile that's easy to clean and not slippery at all. We don't get much water on the lanai due to gutters, so it's never been a problem, but even with occasional allover condensation it has not been too slippery.

Others have used some small kind of rock--Chatahoochee?--that looks great, but we thought it might be hard on our big dog's elbows.

We have 2 inch pavers on sand. No problem. Be sure to keep drainage in mind. The rain water will soak in but if you have a very heavy rain you could get pooling if the slope is not done correctly. Keep some extra pavers and you can make some planters.

We have a screened lanai and chose chattahoochee river rock. We love it. If we had to do it over again we would surely choose the same.

We have Chattahoochee river rock on our (screened) lanai and small birdcage.
(also our CYV walkway, front door entrance and on the garage floor)
The rocks are from 5 kinds of granite outcroppings - about the size of small aquarium gravel, but tumbled, not scratchy. Smooth enough for a barefoot baby.
A variety of mixed stone color combinations- can be custom blended.
Water permeates through it -no puddles after a rain. Ours is not slippery when wet.
I can pull the car into the garage on a rainy day without my wet tires slipping on the smooth floor. (It is not recommended for use on a sloped driveway, however. Level surfaces are best.)
Doesn't seem to hold much heat- being barefoot is no problem on the walk.
Chairs, planters glide easily and sit level on the lanai.
Should a spot get damaged, say by chemical spill, it can be spot repaired. (professionally)
It is seamless.

It is finished with a clear coat (sparkles in the sunshine) -that clear coat does require professional re- application occasionally, depending on the sun exposure. Ours will be three years old in July ( Eastern exposure on the lanai) and still looks brand new. We will probably never have to reseal the garage floor, as it is in the shade.
What I like about tile, pavers or paint/stain is the visual interest that can be created. Chattahoochee is rather plain in comparison…. but I REALLY love it.

Who installs Chattahoochee? I've never heard of it. It sounds interesting.

Love the river rock.

Do a search on the site and you'll find other threads that identify the installer.

We have the Chattahoochee river rock and also love it. We would not have anything else after enjoying this.

Try PM'ing Uptowngirl for a recommendation. We have seen hers, and it is very nice.

We had the Chatahoochee river rock around our outdoor pool in Clearwater when the kids were growing up. We loved it for all the reasons that Uptown girl mentioned, especially the fact is was NOT slippery when wet. Our concern then was kids running around the pool. But I also loved the fact that water did not pool AT ALL on the surface.

That is what I think we will use on our Lanai for all the same reasons.

Also our pool was not under birdcage, just open to the hot sun in a fenced yard. The river rock held up great for years before needing to be re sealed.

Can someone please tell me who does this Chattahoochee rock or PM me?

Another option is sprayed concrete. The process sprays a base layer of concrete (you choose color). Then a template is laid for a pattern and color of your choosing. The template is then picked up. We had our lanai done 5 years ago and it is great. Process is done several ways and used on driveways also.

Yes. Matt Allums- (352) 253-0622.

You can also access opinions, recommendations, contact info etc. for all sorts of things by using the search feature (above) at the top of our TOTV forum page.
If you hover your cursor on search, a box will drop down and you can type in key words.
Archived posts on your topic (a wealth of information) will appear.

Then you won't have to wait for someone to answer your question.

That's true. Be sure, though, to check the date of the threads that you are reading. Some are years old, and circumstances may have changed since then. Many new posters forget to check the dates of the first posts on threads. The newer the thread, the more reliable the information.

Just a suggestion.

I saw some ceramic tile laid outside of a show room of Floor Masters. I spoke with them and they said it holds up well outdoors. They use a special grout when they install it outside. They had some that looked like weathered barn siding. I think it would look different then the usual. I've painted the floor twice now in ten years and the sun just eats the paint very quickly.

We had Chattahoochee River rock installed on our screened in lanai last summer. Mid State Stone in Summerfield did it and it looks fabulous. We chose it because of some friends who live up near Tierra Del Sol country club who had theirs put in nearly 20 years ago and it still looks new. It's not slippery when wet, feels good to walk barefoot, and the dogs seem to like lying on it.

That's true, I forgot to mention that. Our tile is under roof, but still they used a weatherproof grout. We had many cracks in our concrete lanai floor. Warranty agreed to skim coat it and paint it, but we were afraid of further cracking, and they were going to charge us $200 to do that. We wanted a more permanent solution. The painting without skim coating would not have covered the cracks.

There are so many options, and they all look good. I love our tile, but the Chatahoochie river rock is really pretty.

Mid State Stone / Mike Reimer 352-245-1990 or Chattahoochee RiverRock / Matt Allums 352-253-0622. Highly recommend the flooring and I suggest you get an estimate from both installers.

I would not recommend "Trex" brand. I have a deck with Trex and it mildews. There are other brand planks, such as Veranda that don't have that problem. Whether it is suitable for a lanai I couldn't say.

Matt Allums is the person who did our river rock. He did both the lanai and the outside pad (ours is over sized being on a corner lot). Very happy.

Who did your tiling? What was the cost? Longman@comcast.net

Our tiling was done by a private individual working on the side (works for a TV contractor). He tiled our living/dining area to match the kitchen, entry & baths for $2500. He tiled the lanai for $1100. He did an excellent job on both. But then he skipped out on us after doing a very poor job, and not finishing it, bricking our front walk. Halfway through the job, we paid him the rest of the cost of the job (I know, I KNOW! But he had been so trustworthy, and it was only $300.) So I would not recommend him. His name is Marco, and if he is reading this or you know him, he owes us $.

I will not turn him in to Srs. vs. Crime because he is a very nice man with a family to support, and I really think he skipped because he knew he screwed up the brick job. It's being redone tomorrow from scratch for $900 by a company highly recommended on this forum.
