Another example of entitlement. Most of my neighbors have decorated the street with their garbage TODAY A NATIONAL HOLIDAY HONORING OUR MILITARY. Do you really think it is going to be picked up today? Oh wait - all that counts is that your trash us at the curb. Certainly not the millions who gave all to protect you.

Isn't that a little harsh?
We saw in the paper that recycle was the preceding Saurday and that trash pick up was on our next scheduled day.
We were in Jacksonville yesterday. My aunt told us they have garbage pickup on every holiday except Christmas.

No. I don't think it is harsh enough. It's rude and self absorbed and shameful on what should be a day of respect.

Diane,
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I put the trash out at about 5 a.m. wondering if it would be picked up. I'll put it back in the garage. No one wants to look at garbage in the midst of our beautiful flag-proud yards.
If you lived next door to me, I would thank you if you knocked on the door to say "Did you know there won't be garbage pickup today?"--
I didn't know until I read your post.

I really don't understand how that shows "disrespect." No one sat their trash by the street to make any statement about those to be memorialized today. It seems to me the two are completely unrelated. Memorial Day is about what's in our heads and our hearts, not what's in our driveway.

Thank you Kitty for getting it. For others that bag of garbage is going to look lovely and smell wonderful after sitting out in 92 degrees for the day. Looks swell next to the flags in the driveway. Makes an interesting statement.

I understand how you feel but unfortunately Sumter County Sanitation is who you should be angry with. Here's is the Holiday Trash pickup schedule. As you can see, there is no pick up on Memorial Day but there will be trash pick up on Veteran's Day. Give them a call if you want to express your displeasure.

I am with Kitty, "no one wants to look at garbage in the midst of our beautiful flag-proud yards". I do wish folks would pay attention to the sanitation rules for their area. The rules are in the paper and online. It's not that hard to find out when to put trash out. Thank you Kitty for taking your trash back to the garage. One less black bag to look at until Thursday!

I live in Sumter County and my trash pickup day is Monday. On many other holidays there is trash pickup. This is an exception. However, it certainly was stated in the papers that there would be no trash pickup today.

I agree - would rather not look at trash bags out all day amongst the flag lined streets. What I think will be more interesting is how many of these folks will have enough sense to bring it back it later today when it might dawn on them there is no pick up.

For Monday people it will be a whole week without garbage pickup. I'm sort of surprised that ther isn't a next day after Holiday service. But for now I'll just keep it percolating in the garage. Sure wish I didn't have shrimp and chicken this week.

Well said, I agree wholeheartedly.
We don't live in TV yet, but once we do I believe it will be best if I stay off of this forum on TOTV, since quite a few of the rant posts just make me shake my head in disbelief. That's all I'd better say.

Yup, I'm sure that's what those folks meant to do. Show disrespect to those that gave their lives by forgetting there's no trash pickup today. I bet they're all secretly terrorists plotting to overthrow the country. Surprising when you think that probably some of those folks who put their trash out are veterans themselves and probably lost comrades somewhere along the way. Forgetting that there is no trash pickup today and showing disrespect to our fallen veterans are two very unconnected events. The only explanation that I could see for your post would be if people knew there was no trash pickup today and intentionally put out trash to show disrespect, and without knowing anyone on your block I would wager that isn't the case.

No, it won't be a week....there will be trash pickup on Thursday. We have trash pickup two times a week, recyclables picked up once a week and greens collection once per week.

I think the point is more that people should be aware it is a holiday and make the extra effort to determine if there is garbage pick up - not really too hard to do.

We have trash pickup on Thursdays and Mondays. So the trash was picked up on Thursday, no pickup today, and the next pickup is this Thursday. Thursday to Thursday sounds like a week.

And they call this "America's friendliest hometown"?------Can't get my house finished in Volusia County fast enough and leave all these "friendly" people. To all you people thinking about selling and moving here permanently, I strongly suggest moving here for a year first so you can experience all these "Ugly Americans"!

Thanks for the info, Pooh. (We don't get the paper.) I can't imagine having to go a week in this heat without trash pickup.barf

Perhaps you could go up and down the street and rant to your neighbors about their lack of respect? Posting about it here will not change the situation - but it might change the next holiday in your neighborhood..

I wouldn't have known either, but I certainly would not have associated the trash on the street with disrespect of our military. Just people who didn't know any different. Seems to me that if so many put the trash out, then the message of no pick up today must not have spread very far.

For a lot of people it is a DUH moment!
We have trash pickup on Thursdays and Mondays. So the trash was picked up on Thursday, no pickup today, and the next pickup is this Thursday. Thursday to Thursday sounds like a week.
I understood it to mean those with pickup on Monday would be waiting until next Monday. Didn't even think about what you are saying....yup, one week.
Not a problem, I'm sure most of us had trash pick up once a week where we came from.

Oh please! We are both Veterans AND we knew today was Memorial Day AND we knew there was no trash pick up. But that a didn't stop us from putting out a bag of trash late last night. Call it force of habit, call it a senior moment, call us forgetful dumb asses if you want. But don't dare call us disrespectful to our country and it's Veterans.
We brought our trash back in this morning as soon as we realized our mistake, as did our other neighbors who did the same thing. I'm sure that most of your neighbors have or will bring their trash back in if you give them half a chance.

I really am dismayed. Been here (Gilchrist) on & off since our Feb closing. Been a ToTV member for 3 years. Have read some harsh comment on here before of course, but thought - - - well these are probably the Opinionators that love to cause controversy, Know-it-alls, love to call people out, and hide behind their keyboards. There's always a percentage on any public forum.
I, for one, is now labeled the "Unpatriotic neighbor" by these Posters. I checked the Villages CDD website yesterday re trash collection - they did not include 2014 schedule - but the 2013 indicated Residential Trash Pickup Will Occur. I thought, hmm, well OK. Last night walking our pup, saw that almost 1/2 of the neighbors here had their trash and recyc bags out on the driveway; OK. So out ours went. BTW, We just started getting the Villages Sun paper - but it contains so much info, did not run across any notice re trash pickup.
We are on a block where some neighbors have flags out along the curb - did not notice if THEY have bags out as well. I WOULD NEVER consider THEM unpatriotic if so.
I Love our country, our military, and those that gave their lives for us. But please give me a break - to those that TRASH my so-called 'disrespectful intent' when accidentally putting bags on the curb. C'mon...Really?
