View Full Version : Blocking Items for Sale

When I click on New Posts I see up to several pages of recent material. This morning there were 80 threads and 31 of them were in the Items for Sale Forum. This seems about the usual ratio. Mr. Moderator, others, is there a way to not have the Items for Sale forum material included when I click on New Posts? Yes it is a small inconvenience to just skip them and yes I understand that when I click on page 2 then 3 etc. that generates more opportunity to have advertising exposure. I am just asking

New Posts should have ALL new posts included which means for sale itms. Personally I don't see what the big deal is you are not obligated to open and read them. Just curious as to why this is an issue?

May or may not be an issue, but I agree that we should be able to block the for sale posts.

Agree! We can go to the for sale site if we want to buy something! Annoying ! If you find out how to block, please share

I agree. Even if a minimum dollar amount were established, maybe $50, that would help.

But of course we must keep in mind that this site is wonderful.
And it's FREE for us to use.
If the Admins choose to allow any ad, it's still a great site!

I love the Items for Sale posts as they appear. Even though back in my home roost I have been able to make some great purchases without being at my snowbird nest! Not at all inconvenient for me! :)

Seems to me it is easier to just check new posts and not have to look in multiple places if you are wanting to buy something and want to read new posts. Just looking in one spot, new posts, is easier. Just don't posts that you're not interested in. I don't open every post, just what interests me. How hard is that?

You are correct that the items for sale are clearly marked and if you are not interested in those you can go past them and not open them.

That being said we are working on a new classified program to launch soon.

I am very glad, because it is kind of starting to look like Craig's List. One time somebody offered a blouse for sale for $2. Ridiculous! Goodwill charges more.

It's starting to look like one big ugly yard sale. I was under the impression this was a chat line for anyone to chat about TV, or whatever.

I do like the idea of the classified section, completely separate from the chat line.

Funny- I was just getting ready to add my comment that it was starting to look like a garage sale and yours popped up..
thanks for reading my mind..
I sorta like the for sale ads, cause I can laugh at what some people want to sell.. really?? Goodwill truck is behind Walmart.. go donate.

It is a chat line, but there is nothing wrong with selling your items on here!!!! I personally like it :)

Welllll, I agree with ya'll and have heard that admin is checking on the issue. there were 45 sales posts recently by the same poster, who never posted anything but ads. So, there's one hugely offensive poster upsetting the balance of our usual bliss.

Come on guys, lighten up a little. I just found and purchased a pristine Ping 5 wood with a graphite shaft for $40 from a very nice gentleman.

That is great! It's something worth selling, not something priced at $0.50 or $1 and is worn out.

The problem is some people are running a business. see the items for sale ads and figure out who...

Okay, but our point is maybe they would segregate that section, and you could have gone there to shop. And we wouldn't have to wade through the yard sale to get to the chat stuff.

Totv is used differently by everyone. I'm not particularly interested in pedicures or pet's pictures or single's parties. I just choose what interests me. I've purchased several things from parties who no longer needed certain things. There's no way the Administrator can customize the blog to meet everyone's desires.

I trust totv to continually improve and feel out who we are as respondents... I love your examples of what does not interest you. Perfectly said.

So, there's one hugely offensive poster upsetting the balance of our usual bliss.

Did not upset the balance of my bliss! Complaints do that! ;)

So many complaints sound like the posters who did not like the old political forum...and when the admin made it an opt-in only forum - those same folks went back into the forum and continued to complain about the tone of the posts there! And that was AFTER it had been made 'opt-in' and posts did not appear in the feed unless a member has opted-in!!!!!!! They complained - why did they opt-in????

PS - I believe TOTV is a message board [also called a bulletin board], not a chatline or chat room.

You're right. I mislabeled it. However, it is a forum, not a sales page. I think separating the classifieds is a great idea that should please everyone.

At one time, I did feel like the forum was becoming the Craig's list of the villages. However, by sheer accident, I came across an entertainment center that was an absolutely fabulous buy. And.... I bought it... I think if I had to go onto a separate classified section, I may not have seen it.

Also, I bought my villa 2 minutes after it was posted as FSBO.

I'm not complaining anymore, I just don't open those that don't interest me.

I meant to capsulize what the majority are saying on this thread and to emphasize that 45 posts by one person is a bit much in the mix.
not sure what opting is...wasn't here then.
no offense meant.

No offense taken. Re the 45 posts - better to resolve an issue with that one poster rather than disappoint other posters who find the access to classifieds convenient? A word from the Admin to that poster would seem less expensive than reworking TOTV?

Great post and very well stated. I too choose what interests me and bypass the posts I am not interested in. Have also purchased a few items I would not have seen if they were segregated to a separate board.

Yes, but when someone comes on 25 times in the same day posting little items for sale, I think it is wrecking the idea of TOTV being a forum. JMO.

I just used the 'opt out' feature for 'items for sale'.

Also treated myself to using the 'ignore' feature for the first time. Ohhh, THAT felt good.:pepper2:

Thank You Admin, for providing these options.

When I have something I can't live without, I google it. I do not care to buy from individuals I know nothing about and have no guarantee, and I do not want to have to wade through 20 classifieds to get to the community stuff I like.

As Admin said, the opt-out is great for me, and the opt-in works for you. We're both happy.

I've read all the comments and most of them make sense. The classified ads don't bother me but I do understand when one person uses this site as their store front. One suggestion would be if the Admin. could limit the number of items a single person puts up within, say, a week or month.

Now I will tell you what I really don't like -- what really bugs me -- what I don't think has any place within the general threads. It's the commercial ads from businesses. My feeling is that if a business chooses to pay to advertise -- fine. But I don't think their ads should be among Villagers' threads. The one that really bugs me is a certain landscaper who writes recommendations for himself, supposedly from customers. What a joke!

Now I feel better. I've vented. {;>)

Thanks to Admin for trying hard to satisfy each member's needs and wants.

Maybe I'm dense, but I can't figure out how to opt out of the classifieds.

If you are using the TalkofTheVillages screens (green), click on New Posts and at the top of the first post click on the Skip Classified Posts button.

If you are using the default screens (blue),the button is not there. Switch to the Talkofthevillages format, click on the Skip Classified Posts button and then flip back to the default format.
