A while back, there was a thread listing the favorite bands of The Villagers. I can't find it now but am curious to know which ones would you go to over and over again? I love Rocky and The Rollers and Scooter the DJ!

Rocky and the Rollers are the top choice overall in The Villages. You cannot dispute they draw the biggest crowds.

Scooter does an excellent show, too. Big crowds for him.

Some real duds are Garrett Miles, Carol Ann, and Denny Rogers. No crowds at any of their shows.

Uuummm.... Scooter the DJ is not a band. He's a guy that runs a computer. In my opinion when the advertise "Live Entertainment", I expect to see people playing instruments and creating music.

I don't know who's at Spanish Spring tonight, but there's almost no crows there at all. It was some girl singing and a guy with one of those 1970s style keyboards hung around his neck. The guy with the keyboard was also running the computer.

Absolutely true. Scooter has a great personality and stage presence but does not actually do anything except the DJ thing.

A very good entertainer, in my opinion, is Mary Jo Vitale. She is a singer and performs quite often at Katie Belle's.

Susie Casta is very good and also does Katie Belle's as well as the squares.

My all-time favorite at the squares was Norman Lee. You can catch him every Sunday at the Garden Worship Center in Belleview since he is the minister. Great sermons and music, too.

According to the schedule it is the Dream Journey Duo.

Uncle Bob's Rock Shop to me is the best.I like the 60's music but to me Classic Rock is my favorite! I don't believe I've heard good vocals in any band but Uncle Bob's choice of music & talented musicianship is the best here! Imho

Uncle Bob's Rock Shop is a very good one. I also saw a really good blues band called The Smokin Torpedoes. There have been a few others but I'm terrible at remembering names.

As long as there's a live band playing their own instruments I enjoy it.

I wish they would get rid of the button pushers. I sympathize with them because I know that it's tough to make an decent money with more than one or two people.

My vote would be Uncle Bob's for their outstanding musicianship and Rocky for their crowd pleasing fun. Tough to go wrong with either one.

(For Dr. Winston: some of the biggest acts in music 2014 are "button pushers" i.e. David Guetta; Calvin Harris; Steve Aoki. - They add some great vocals to their 'buttons' like on Titanium (with Sia on vocals with David Guetta). I like to think of their "buttons" as an instrument of a new type.)

I agree. It's just that being a musician and knowing how difficult it is to get work around here and knowing how little musicians are paid, it difficult for me to see machines replacing human beings.

It's happening in a lot of professions and to tell the truth, I've toyed with the idea of doing it myself.

Winston- the band you are in would be a great addition to entertainment at the squares! Has anyone seen them? No one in the villages can sing Folsom Prison like the doc!

Saw Uncle Bob's Rock Shop at Spanish Springs in May. The crowd there seemed to be more of an audience which was a lot of fun to be part of. They were totally into the group to the point that nobody was linedancing. Now that's an amazing band.

Totally agree. If I wanted to hear karaoke i would go to the local bar and listen. Most of the entertainment is what I call caned music. People singing with tracks. Like I said karaoke. They should look for someone that has experience in entertainment that hires bands.

We saw Yesterdayze at Spanish Springs in Febuary I think. They were great. :) I would love to see Vinyl Recall play at the squares, they are excellent and very entertaining to watch. The female vocalist is so talented as are the rest of the group.

Uncle Bob's Rock Shop.Hotel California.

They are absolutely the best band I have heard in The Villages in the 10 years that I have been here. Their best venue so far is Katie Belle's. They beat Rocky and the Rollers, Cactus Jack, Dan Story, and any of the "so called bands" that the Villages Entertainment Dept happens to mix together on a given night and give them a catchy name.

My second choice would be The Boogie Brothers. I have seen them at City Fire, but I don't know if The Villages Entertainment Dept has hired them yet.

Dr Winston,

I understand what you area saying about Scooter but...

I love going to the square when he is there. I think he works very hard for his money also. He is an entertainer for sure. I also think he might have ADHD or at least a lot of energy.

I think any time that you can get the crowd engaged in the entertainment and not bored by mediocre entertainment then; then they are worth mentioning.

EDM is all the rage with my son who loves all the DJs who mentioned plus many others (e.g., Carnage, Skrillex, Deadmau5). Concerts are big time events for all of these artists. I also tend to feel that my preference for live music is to have actual musicians performing. Otherwise, we might as well introduce more Milli Vanilli and Ashlee Simpson type acts.

Second Slice performed last night at Spanish Springs. They were very good! It was well attended but plenty of chairs were available for everyone. It was a beautiful Florida evening with just perfect temperatures. I highly recommend seeing them.

HOWEVER, Rocky and the Rollers will be at Spanish Springs on Wednesday, Aug. 20! They definitely are the most popular band in The Villages. Be sure to get there early to save your seats.

I saw them last night at Spanish Springs and I was blown away. What a great band.

Does anyone else think that it's unprofessional for bands to wear old worn our tee shirts and cargo shorts while performing? I see a few bands do this and it really bothers me. I think that it's very unprofessional and shows disrespect for the audience.

Not my taste. I'm not interested in watching a guy wave arrows and giant foam fingers around while dancing badly. I'd rather see live people playing real instruments to make live music.

But my comment was more to point out that the OP's question is, "Who are you favorites BANDS in The Squares?"

I saw Second Slice about a month ago at LSL and it was not good. Maybe they had a bad night. The biggest problem is they have a drummer, but he plays electronic drums, so if the sound system isn't working correctly, all you'll hear is the cymbals. Also the bass was a little too low in volume, combined with the lack of drumming, they had a very clean sound but not a pleasant sound. They also took the stage 5 minutes late, played only a 45 minute set and then took 30 minute break and then had all these problems when they returned.

You can give me Uncle Bob's Rock Shop every night and keep the rest and I would be happy.

Boy, you took the words right out of my mouth. We went to see Leeanne Rimes last year. She looked beautiful but her band looked like they were doing yard work all day. Saw Vince Gill also, he and band were also dressed in torn jeans and old tee shirts. Cheapest tickets were $50, they could have at least cleaned up ....very insulting to the audience.
