I work from home and find that the cellphone call quality is not really good enough for business calls. I just installed an Ooma box - it uses the internet connection (aka voice over IP or VoIP). This is really a good deal if you like having a "landline" phone in your house. The box is $119 (one time cost) and the taxes and 911 fee are less than $4/month. It includes unlimited calling in the US, voice mail, caller id, etc. This is really a lot lower cost than local phone service and the quality is just fine. We use Century Link for internet and they wanted $20/month (plus taxes and 911 fee) so the payoff is in 6 month. You can also, in many cases, transfer your existing number to Ooma.

We use Magic Jack plus with no monthly charges and just $20 a YEAR.

I have been using OOma for about four years. Great service and none of those pesky taxes, service charges and other unidentifiable charges.

Forgot to mention. Your PC doesn't have to be on, in fact you don't even need a PC just an internet connection.

I have been an OOMA user for several years. Good quality and low cost. However I have replaced the boxes 3 times after thundershowers. Box seems very susceptible to lightening. Each time, box was plugged into a surge protector but was still fried. Once under warranty and twice out of warranty. They did sell me a new box at a discount, but still a pain.
As a side note, every time the Comcast internet modem was fried as well. These were the old small version internet modems. Has not happened yet with the newer wireless modems.

I have two Ooma's. One at each home. Been using for many years. Works great....saves a lot of money!

Exactly. You can connect via cat5 cable or WiFI to your modem/router.
