Tell us more. How big is the hole? Have public safety officials been notified? Is the area being evacuated?

Uhhh... Google Earth is not real time. You're likely looking at a photo that's over a year old.

It was a small sink hole. Only about 8' in Dia. and maybe 6' deep. It did attract drones but no new copters.

It has been filled. Hope that holds.

Please tell us more. Everyone panics and worries. Was it in a yard or in the street?

Sounds more like a little cave in due to all the rain rather than a sink hole.
Lets not get our feathers all ruffled!

Yes it was a cave in, that would be a sink hole. It was small and is as of late today filled. It was in the corner of a yard right at the street. Part of the curb was exposed but the street did not sink. There is a small oak tree next to the hole and it did not lean. It's too early to say it is fixed for good but we can only hope it is.
Sink holes are rare even here so don't worry about it. Shouldn't be a problem. It was probably the result of yesterdays storm, but rain is what causes sink holes to wash out.

Bogie -- rain is one of the things that ultimately adds "fuel to the fire" with sinkholes.

An interesting point.
When does a small cave in become a sink hole, and thereby garner news bulletins and television coverage?

Just how the times are now. I am explaining where we live even to people who LIVE in Florida, but of course instead of all the good things that happen here daily, the news wires pick up the few isolated things that are negative.

It is the same with news of any kind. The negative, scary, awful, human garbage and natural disasters get air time.

But the fact that all of us live here in this beautiful place mostly enjoying life is not news worthy.

Don't let that keep all of you from having another wonderful day here. Good morning everyone.

Don't ever let anyone rob you of this wonderful day. You owe no apology for enjoying it.

Something else we have to get used to...the sinkhole phenomenon! In Iowa when there was a huge hole in the ground for no reason, we called it a septic tank collapse.

And if we moved to Iowa there would be natural disasters to get used to there, too.

The stereotyping of FL and TV by people in other states who've never even been here is appalling.

Full explanation of sink hole causes can be found on this thread, and others..............................not worth repeating all of the arguments on this thread.

we dont have septic tanks here, we have sink holes! WHEN we do have the big one here, i mean the hole that swallows an entire house, the property values will go down the drain like flushing a toilet! this hole COULD be the start of the BIG one. homes within a mile will have a huge increase in sink hole insurance rates. Just look at your home an draw a circle on the map that covers one mile . That takes in a huge number of homes impacted! These Are facts ! i really feel sorry for the folks in the area of this sinkhole as they have taken a major hit! and most have no idea!

What's the big deal!!! Sink holes are a part of Florida as they are in other parts of the country, remember the Corvett plant in Ky. When they happen it's not going to be the end of the world. If it's in your back yard you should know about it or maybe not. Just don't open a post if you don't like the topic.

Sorry I mentioned this sink hole but it is in my back yard/neighborhood and I am concerned. If you find sink holes offensive...well you should.

I am from Kentucky originally and believe it or not I had a sink hole in my yard. It was scary but we were lucky and it did not damage our home. Lots in Ky. are large compared to here so there was room in our yard for the sink hole and our house.
Sink holes will generally not affect home prices nor should it frighten people. They are part of Florida. Please chill.

Happy to oblige but the panic and fear aren't caused by you. Sinkholes round about here just cause people to get all nervous and jerky.

We have time to think about things that we didn't use to have time to think about.

They may not agree on this forum but in reality, as long as a sink hole is not on your immediate property or right next door it most likely will be corrected and forgot about.
My point is it will not affect general home sales in The Villages. Yes maybe a home actually dealing with a sink hole. I think if we had 20 to 30 houses with sink hole issues that would cause prices to evaporate. No house would be sold at any price.

The so called "sink hole" was actually a water leak caused by a lightning strike that ruptured the main water line to the sprinkler system. The sand was pushed out of the hole by the geyser that resulted. Not really a sink hole.

Kinda makes all those opinions worthless...................................
