Recording every game and will probably watch all of them.

This World Cup I am hoping that Belgium can mesh all their great players and go far in the Cup.

US has a great coach but few world class players.

Well, it seems it started out with a terrible call that favored the home team. But the skill level from Brazil and Croatia was amazing. Between the US Open and the World Cup, I'm a happy guy.

I am a former player and I am watching the World Cup. US is in a very tough group but they a have good team also. I think they have a chance if they beat Ghana in the first game. Remember you don't have to win your group, top two in each group advance to the next round.

I would like to see the US advance but do not see it as all that likely. I often watch these games as the crowds are almost as entertaining as the players. http://www.fifa.com/

TV announcers today during the Mexico vs Cameroon game mentioned that 85% of teams winning their first game advance into the knockout stage.

Not much to miss, you know the score will be 1-0.

average score of an NFL game is 29-18, or to put it in soccer terms 4-2.5. It takes about 3 hours to play a football game but the actual game play is 11 minutes. I love football and my NY Giants, and you're perfectly within your rights to hate soccer, but if you think it's boring it may come from a lack of appreciation of the game. I know lots of people who don't get baseball, and I think it's a great sport.
Here are some more numbers from an "average" NFL game:
There are 10.5 kickoffs, of which less than half are returned. about 6 are touchbacks.
There are about 133 plays that are runs or passes (80 passes and 53 runs). The other 31 plays are kickoffs, punts, field goal attemps, or knee downs.
More than one-third of pass or runs do not gain anything.
the game will be stopped often, for penalties and reviews and for time outs.

I love baseball and football. There's a "plot" to the games (for want of a better name), and I know enough about them to appreciate the moves. I have tried very hard to like the kinds of games where possession of the ball is constantly changing, several times a minute. I'm talking mainly soccer and hockey, but basketball too. I'm almost there with hockey. Our kids love and played both, so I keep trying.

Correct 1 of 4 games.

1-0 Mexico vs Cameroon
3-1 Brazil vs Croatia
3-1 Chile vs Australia
5-1 Netherlands vs Spain

In soccer (aka football in most of the world) a 3-1 score is a superior win; a 5-1 score is a blow out; a 5-1 win over the previous world cup winner is historic. It should be noted that Spain beat Netherlands 1-0 in the 2010 WC final.

As an old player and coach, I still love the game. Looking at the abundance of Pro sports opportunities in the U.S. compared to the rest of the world, a man's soccer talent and skill has a long road to climb to be recognized on the world stage. Compare that to women's pro sports on the world stage and there is more available opportunity for soccer. Where does the WNT rank? Oh, that would be the top. In my opinion the U.S. men's soccer program must learn how to blend 3 factors, talent, skills, and experience and be able to maintain that going forward. So this time, perhaps to the 2nd round, but not beyond.

I hung around with an international group of students while living in the dorm (Middlebrook Hall-- University of Minnesota) often. That US-Ghana game was exciting. Very fast goal for the US. I really only really enjoy watching soccer when they have a shoot-out after a tie. Not sure how that works in these matches. http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/questions-americans-2014-fifa-world-cup-embarrassed/story?id=24192796

You were watching baseball and found soccer boring? In a typical 3 hour plus baseball game, there are only 18 minutes of action. one hour and 15 minutes is spent between pitches. 42 minutes are spent between innings. It's too bad you didn't catch the USA vs Portugal match. Non stop action for 95 minutes.

Anyone who thinks this game is boring does not understand it. Google the rules and read them. Try Wikipedia. Lots of opportunities. As a former soccer mom, I love seeing it on TV. I hope after the World Cup, we will see more matches televised. Next year Orlando's team, the Lions, will be in the MLS and in 2016 the revamped stadium will be ready. You can keep up with the MLS on line. By the ways, the is an app for that. MLS Matchday in the App Store. Also there is an app called Sofa Score or many sports. It has a section for FILA World Cup in Brazil.

Just reading a bunch of rules is boring and won't help. I watched some of the world cup because of the USA playing and tried hard to enjoy it.
I learned American football by watching years of TV and learning from the comentators. These comentators that I've heard in soccer are no help and talk way above the level of fans trying to learn the game. Their commentary was fine I suppose for someone from Brazil, but if they want soccer to catch on in the US then they need to do some educating or there will be no interest.
Right now the interest is high because of the US playing other countries, but once it's over soccer will go back to a minor sport in the US.
I've got to say I've enjoyed the skill I've seen of players passing the ball with accuracy that is unbelieveable, but the public needs to learn the game, rules, and strategies and the best way to learn this is for the comentators to explain what is going on and not assume everyone already knows.
I'm trying to become a fan but need help.

My husband found the game more interesting after he learned some of the rules. But I agree with you about the commentators. Quite frankly, a lot of them come off as snobs.

Also, some sports are just not interesting to people. I was a soccer mom too. I was also a swimming mom, lacrosse mom, baseball mom, basketball mom, football mom. I only missed being a golf mom because other sports seasons interfered. (This was all one kid!) But other than football, lacrosse, and baseball, I wasn't a real "mom" to any of those sports. They just aren't interesting to me, and soccer tops that list. I don't feel I need to force myself to like any sport. It either catches my excitement, or it doesn't. If it catches my eye, then I make the effort to learn more about the game.

I think soccer has a bright future in the US because there are so many kids playing it these days. Already the first group are in their 30s, and the spectator base will continue to grow.

Hate to disagree Shimpy, but soccer in the US is no longer a minor sport. There is a Major League that has 16 teams in the US and 3 teams in Canada. They average over 18,000 per game and are a profitable league. Major League Soccer has the third highest average attendance of any sports league in the U.S., and is the seventh highest attended professional soccer league worldwide. With over 13 million Americans playing soccer in the United States, soccer is the third most played team sport in the U.S., behind only basketball and baseball/softball. The game against Portugal had 24 million viewers in the US compared with 15 million viewers for the NBA Finals. The largest category of soccer in the United States in terms of participation is boys' and girls' youth soccer. Soccer is one of the most played sports by children in the United States. In 2012, soccer was the #4 most played team sport by high school boys, and soccer overtook softball to become the #3 most played team sport by high school girls. As of 2006, the U.S. was the #1 country in the world for participation in youth soccer, with 3.9 million American youths (2.3 million boys and 1.6 million girls) registered with U.S. Soccer. The number of high school soccer players more than doubled from 1990 to 2010, giving soccer the fastest growth rate among all major U.S. sports. In recent decades, more youth sports organizations have turned to soccer as a supplement to American football,
and most American high schools offer both soccer and football in their fall sports seasons. Due to the rising number of youths playing, the term soccer mom is used in American social and political discourse to describe middle- or upper-middle class suburban women with school-age children. Americans between the ages of 12 and 24 rank professional soccer as their second favorite sport behind only American football. And in 2011, the FIFA video game ranked as the #2 most popular video game in the country, behind only Madden.
So, while people of our generation may not be soccer fans, the generations behind us appear to be.

I sure find these penalty shoot outs exciting. They must be nerve racking for the intense soccer fans and even more so for the players.

Costa Rica beat Greece yesterday in one of these. http://www.smh.com.au/fifa-world-cup-2014/world-cup-match-report/world-cup-2014-costa-rica-knock-out-greece-after-dramatic-penalty-shootout-20140630-zsqge.html

I'm sure many schools do play soccer along with chess and field hockey. My point is that soccer hasn't arrived in the USA yet as a major sport. When have you drove up I 75 and observed all sorts of vehicles with flags cheering their Gators or Seminole soccer team for a upcoming game? Have you ever heard of a big Michigan-Ohio State soccer game on ESPN? How about an annual Army/Navy soccer game? Avid soccer fans want it to catch on and believe it has but I see nothing to support that.

Change takes time and commitment. There are more and more fans of soccer. And, the higher the US (men and women) get at this at subsequent World Cup standings, this should bring in more fans. By 2038, you would probably see the sights you describe driving up I-75.

The decision of the Dutch coach to change goaltender at the end of extra time was going to either be brilliant or the most colossal blunder in the tournament. Apparently the substitute goalie is not as good as the starter in the full skills needed for the game, but he is superior in stopping penalty kicks. Well done coach as he stopped amazingly 2 of the attempts and guessed correctly on every single kick. Holland advances

Sad day for the host country, a real embarrassment. I guess when they lost their star, he was the heart of the whole team. They couldn't do anything without him. That just means they built the team around one player. You can't win that way. I stand by my earlier prediction that Germany will go all the way. I felt that way since the Germany - USA match. They have great ball control. They had an incredible match today.. Too bad they couldn't save a couple of goals for the final. Tomorrow's match will be more interesting.

BBC Sport - Brazil in shock at World Cup rout (http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/28223121)

This article looks at how various newspapers around the World are treating Germany's sound defeat of host nation Brazil's team. I will have to look at a lot of the Brazilian newspapers too. I do not read Portuguese very well. I won an award at the University of Nevada, Reno for the Outstanding Reader of French so any of the Romance Languages are easy until you get into various conditional and past tenses. I do not get enough practice with foreign languages any more.

David Beckham has Argentina winning 3-1. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/worldcup2014/article-2690038/David-Beckham-Argentina-beat-Germany-3-1-win-2014-World-Cup.html

That sounds like the most logical outcome 2-1 with Germany winning its first World Cup as a unified nation. At least, the German men. The German women already did it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_in_Germany
