Could this work in The Villages??? (as it does on Ikarias)

''Wake naturally, work in the garden, have a late lunch, take a nap. At sunset, they either visited neighbors or neighbors visited them. Their diet was also typical: a breakfast of goat’s milk, wine, sage tea or coffee, honey and bread. Lunch was almost always beans (lentils, garbanzos), potatoes, greens (fennel, dandelion or a spinachlike green called horta) and whatever seasonal vegetables their garden produced; dinner was bread and goat’s milk. At Christmas and Easter, they would slaughter the family pig and enjoy small portions of larded pork for the next several months. ""

The doctor noted that ""the Ikarians’ diet, like that of others around the Mediterranean, was rich in olive oil and vegetables, low in dairy (except goat’s milk) and meat products, and also included moderate amounts of alcohol. It emphasized homegrown potatoes, beans (garbanzo, black-eyed peas and lentils), wild greens and locally produced goat milk and honey. ""
etc., etc., etc.

GRANTED, IT IS A LOT TO READ THE ENTIRE 7 PAGES....BUT WELL WORTH IT.......(LINK TO N.Y. TIMES ARTICLE IN EARLIER POST)

MANY MOONS LATER, WHEN OUR MAIN CHARACTER WENT BACK TO THE U.S. TO ASK WHY HIS DIAGNOSED LUNG CANCER HAD NEVER ADVANCED.................."THE DOCTORS WERE ALL DEAD".

Nope - won't work in The Villages - we are not allowed to have the kind of garden that would be needed to feed yourself.

We can't keep a pig or a goat either. WELL...maybe we could. We are allowed two pets.

Don't start with the poop jokes.

This thread is like asking, "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin"?

We do the best we can, and hope for the best.

GOD willing.

Considering that it takes a half-acre farm to grow enough, diverse food types to keep one person healthy, I seriously doubt that life was as easy and carefree as suggested. Even a quarter acre garden is a major undertaking. Never mind if you add in pasturage to support livestock. And when you're done tending the garden and feeding the animals don't forget to go pick a few tons of olives and grapes for the presses so we can have wine and oil. And take up spinning and weaving while you're at it since there's no Beale's down the road. And in your spare time before lounging the evening away on the neighbor's portico, don't forget to dry the tea leaves and coffee beans, do your beekeeping, winnow your wheat, grind your flour, and bake some bread. Whew! I think golf carting to the square is a bit more my speed! ;-)
