Today is National Martini Day. What's your preference? Shaken or stirred? Dirty....? Are you celebrating? Here's a toast to James Bond, who we all know preferred his shaken, not stirred!

I do not drink but these look interesting. I did drink to be sociable while at the University of Minnesota Law School as well as while at the University of Denver Graduate School of Librarianship and Information Management. A law school student band even sang Happy Birthday to me around 2-24-1989 when they learned about my experiences in Reno, Nevada with Michelle Mitchell's murder, that investigation, and the Woods appeal cases which you could find in many places in the U of MN Law Library. http://law.justia.com/cases/nevada/supreme-court/1985/13318-1.html
I drew the line though at being invited up to sing with the band of law students. Maybe, if I had been drunk enough....
With the librarians at the University of Denver I usually got fruit flavored tequila mixes of some kind. http://www.cookingchanneltv.com/recipes/margarita-recipes.html
While at BYU Law School, they would only allow milk, juice, etc. in the cafeteria's and there was a very strict code at BYU about what you could and could not do. I only lasted ten days or so there. This was a huge change from someone who earned two degrees at the University of Nevada, Reno where they were no rules like those at BYU. http://saas.byu.edu/catalog/2013-2014ucat/GeneralInfo/HonorCode.php
Check out this Mormon Martini! http://sistasinzion.com/2011/11/mormon-martini.html

I think I need to start drinking Martinis again. I like dirty vodka martinis on the rocks with extra olives.

What's a "dirty" martini? I will bet they have them at Red Sauce. :D

"Dirty" means you add some brine from the olive jar. They have this drink everywhere, I've never had it at Red Sauce-I'm really not a big Red Sauce fan.

A dirty martini is when they put some of the olive juice in.
I used to like mine shaken, grey goose vodka, up in a very cold glass, very dry & lots of olives! No olive juice in mine please.

On the rare occasions I drink dirty martinis they are to be shaken and I request them to be filthy.

There seems to be a day for everything! I love this one, and will happily support it by having a vodka martini with extra blue cheese stuffed olives.

One of the Red Sauce owners came to the private dog park-- Doggie Doo Run Run-- when they first started their new restaurant. They were taking care of their daughter's pug. It never did a whole lot, and the co-owner seemed to be on the phone much of the time she was at the dog park doing Red Sauce orders and the like. Because of her, we went to Red Sauce a few times but found Bonefish Grill more of the choice for special occasions after they opened.
Have not seen the pug for years. Their daughter must have graduated from college.
"Sex on the Square" seems a little tacky as an advertising tool but seems to have worked.
Is that a martini?
"Jubilee on the Square" looks good. http://www.drinksmixer.com/drink9416.html. I no longer drink though except Coke Zero and other diet sodas.

When did Martinis stop being Gin and Vermouth and become any two liquors that you can name mixed and poured into a glass. When I went to bartender school back in the stone age a Martini was Gin and Dry Vermouth. The only other option was a Vodka Martini in which the Gin was replaced with Vodka.
Today there are chocolate martinis, melon martinis, apple martinis and every kind of martini you can imagine. The only problem is that none of these are actually Martinis. Most of them do not have dry vermouth as an ingredient.
A Manhattan is not a Martini and neither is a Rob Roy even though they have similar formulas with different ingredients.

There are so called martinis with no gin or vodka much less dry vermouth. Seems sacrilegious.

I totally agree, have never had a flavored "martini".

If it doesn't have gin and vermouth it's not a martini. If it's got vodka, that's a "vodka martini" not a "martini". The only acceptable flavor additive is olive and pimento (no garlic no blue cheese no jalapeņo). Sure, use a twist of lemon if you're having a vodkatini, but keep it away from a true martini. And no onions... that's a Gibson. And the best ones are not shaken, they are made with gin that has been stored in the freezer... no ice to dilute the flavors. Whew... I feel better having got that off my chest!

Well, you can see the Martini menu at many bars and restaurants these days that list tens of so called Martinis. Ridiculous!
