We have been following the Great Race too. In CT right now and will be in The Villages to see them when they arrive.
If you have Facebook, they have a Facebook page and you can follow them with their posts. They have a video of President George H.W. Bush seeing them off in Maine.

Don't have a link, but if you have Facebook, do a search for "Great Race" and when you see the page, click "like" and it will be on your news feed.
They give daily updates on where they are stopping for lunch and where they are doing overnight stays.

Do they time each segment? Wondering how it works.
Found out that the Villages Region of the AACA was responsible for bringing it here to The Villages this year. Over 15,000 spectators from all over Florida are expected to converge on Lake Sumter Landing, Sunday. I found this neat video on their website HERE (http://tvraaca.org/greatrace2012i.htm). Wow-weee! Fun!

Yup, it's more of a "Road Rally" than a Race. All back roads for 9 days. 96 cars are still running. The first one is due here at 3:20 PM, then 30 seconds apart, roughly.

WE hardly EVER go to the squares because of seat saving and stuff. This is one thing we would love to see. I wonder where we could park the cart to observe them driving by that wouldn't be all crowded up and in someone's way.

With all of the advertising and the likelihood of non-villagers attending, I doubt if here will be a good place to observe them unless you get there really early and stake out a spot.

Perhaps the Sun will print a map of their route into TV and it might be better to park out of the Square to see them come by.

Does anyone know how they are coming in from Ocala? Will they be coming in on Morse Boulevard or Buena Vista? Maybe watching from golf carts along that route would be a good spot so as not to be trampled in the squares! If you know, would you please post! Thanks.

I am in Ca working and will miss this event. It sounds great to see the vintage cars and the exciting climax to this race.
I'm especially dissapointed about missing it because my hubby will be driving my Ca Roadster in the procession welcoming them!
We didn't know about the event until he was approached on the golf course Sat and asked to attend the vintage car show Sat night. At the car show on Sat he found out that some 20-30 local vintage cars and the Ca Roadster Golf Cart club will lead the cars from the Great Race to the awards ceremony. What fun!!!
Wish I could be there! If you see the procession, my cart is the red one with the surfboard on top! Wave to Bill as he goes by. I'd love a photo too if possible!
I'll just be working on the left coast and having a little pity party! Haha!!

Still not sure if they will be coming in on Morse or Buena Vista, but the final entrance into LSL wil be Canal Street to the finish at the square. I think we'll head down around Noon and get a spot somewhere up past the BBQ place.

If you missed yesterday's car show, you missed a good one!
Today there will be some local collector cars in the square area, and as they arrive the Great Race cars will be on display there, too. The best experience will be to brave the crowds and be there for all the fun.
Our Model T Ford club will have 2 cars there. We'll be parked in our assigned spot just after 10 AM. We may take in a movie while we wait until the race cars start rolling in at 3:30. Parking will be restricted because of the cars on display.
Drive your golf cart. Cart pool if you can. If you come with another cart park bumper to bumper (front to back). Get there early, go shopping, have lunch and enjoy the scenery! It will be HOT like yesterday, so come prepared. All cars from local clubs and the race cars are to leave at 6 PM.
Look for me and my Huckster Wagon woody and Kevin with his bright red Speedster.

When we came out of Sumter Landing last night many of the parking areas around the town were already closed off, and the weather forecast for today is calling for heat indexes in the triple numbers and it is only going to cool down this evening into the 80s.

Was just amazed of the ages of these cars to make it from Maine to Florida. So nice to have the ending here in The Villages. I tip my hat, to all involved to make this happen. Really enjoyed the show, even though the temp reached 95

Papa Larry it was 97 and the humidity was AWFUL. We abandoned the whole thing about four and never saw Kitty with her Cymbals. We did see at least half a dozen women with LONG JEANS and long sleeved tops and buttoned to the neck and wearing high heels .(Must have been new to Florida and new to The Villages). I was about to MELT.
The cars were awesome and the folks sitting around us were too. We came about two and found a bench on Canal and made new friends.
It was hot and fun. I love this place. Good Morning everyone.

Hot !!! you have that correct, but it was so much fun to see all the cars and people enjoying themselves.. the whistles when the cars crossed the finish line.. I was also amazed by some of the clothes people were wearing..we left before the mass exodus , but we had great time.. I just love living here !!!

I actually yelled this at one of the cars inhabitants. "You don't know it but you just reached Paradise!" Sweetie just shook his head.
What an event. I am glad we didn't miss it.

It was pretty cool to see those cars yesterday. We got to City Fire at 11:30 to get a good seat. Had a great time. Loved it when the cars drove off at 6:00. A lot of them were revving up their engines. It was a fun day.

What a fun time had by all. I would like to thank Allan Stone from the villages AACA for making this possible. This was a once in a life time event. We had a few people from our club (the villages mustang club) welcoming the racers to the villages and had a blast. Thanks again for a wonderful time.

You got that right, it was Allan's club, The Villages Region AACA, that was responsible for bringing the event to The Villages. Both Disney World and Daytona International Speedway turned it down, I was told. On Sunday he had over 300 volunteers lined up from 15 clubs to personally welcome each driver and navigator to our "Friendliest Hometown".
Yet I never saw an article in The Daily Sun on Saturday giving more details about the race coming the next day. Just the same ad that ran before. Today, was just a short article. What happened, Daily Sun? Were you asleep?

I too was disappointed about the coverage given to this event. No large news service picked it up and the daily sun did a horrible job of promoting it. We figured if it was a political event of republicans the sun would have done a huge spread. Shame on them for screwing this up. Oh well enough said other than that I think everyone that showed up had a great time. Talking with the driver we had she said that the turn out here is wonderful and she liked the whistles that we blew when the cars came across the finish line was a "hoot".

Screwing this up?????
How could it have been more successful? Sun or no Sun? The online news gave it excellent coverage.
Local news do not dictate if the AP wire is going to find something newsworthy.
I don't know why they didn't give it as much coverage as they should but hindsight is sometimes far better.

I guess I should have worded my response another way. What I meant about local news was the local television stations around Orlando could have aired some of the race. I know all about newspapers being a little one sided and the villages news online a lot of people don't see that one. And they did a great job with reporting the race.

I have to agree with delima2000 on this one. The Sun coverage was very poor. Any other time we would have seen a map of where they were entering TV which would have made it easier to find a place to stand. On the other hand, I thought maybe all the talk of thousands and thousands of people descending on Sumter Landing might have made TV nervous.

Nice cymbals.
I heard the Orlando media WAS invited but usually don't come to The Villages because they are not welcome here.
WUCF was here and filmed some footage. I saw them.
The AACA Club was honored at the race banquet for all the effort they put in to bringing the race here. Allan and the rest deserve a lot of thanks.
The race teams and support staff in the event filled 3 hotels in the area. All picked up a copy of The Daily Sun on Sunday when they arrived and saw NO STORY about The Great Race coming to The Villages.
BUT they DID get a Sales Packet and Lifestyle DVD, however!
