Does anyone have a pug? I will be moving to TV soon and am concerned about how my pug will do there in the summer heat. Can you leave them outside for hours when it is hot?

Absolutely not. Not just because of the heat but there are owls and other predators.

Short-nosed dogs should never be left out in heat for extended periods. Reality is Florida is too hot to leave any pet out for extended periods during the day without a lot of shade. Just too hot and muggy.

My cat doesn't even like to go out on the lanai until after about 7 o'clock.

Why would you leave any pet outside for "hours???"

If that's your thinking, why do you even have a dog?

Would you want to sit outside in the heat, sun, and humidity wearing a fur coat?

NO.

It was in the mid 90's this past week and the heat and humidity was way beyond what is healthy..for human or animal. Even though our dog wanted to be out, like a child, I had to pull him in after 10 minutes max. You have to be careful in the summer.
Many dogs are outside dogs. If I lived up north, my dog would be happy to be outside for hours in temperate weather and we certainly had the accommodations for safety; I think reprimanding someone for leaving a dog outside for hours was uncalled for.

Lighten up. OP just asked a question from someone moving here. Just looking for info and advice. No need to jump all over her.

Just curious why anyone would want to leave their dog out for hours. Especially in Florida heat.

This is not the first time Veronica has asked this question.

Veronica, PLEASE don't leave your dog outside without your presence.

I agree, no one should be discouraged from asking a question. :agree:

No dog should be left outside for hours when it is hot.
And it goes without saying, please never leave your dog in a parked car when it is hot.
Cars heat up very quickly, and excessive heat can kill.

I agree that no one should be discouraged from asking a question. However, anyone moving to TV already knows that in the summer the average temp is around 95 degrees during the day with humidity that is almost off the charts. Pair that together with a dog who has a pushed-in face and under the best circumstances, has a breathing problem anyway.

I find it unconscionable that someone would even consider leaving this dog or any dog, outside in our summer weather, and I'm not even taking into consideration the almost daily downpours.

Veronica, I went back and read your previous posts and it appears to me that you have some trepidation about your pug living indoors and you are trying to find a way for the dog to live outdoors in your CYV (i.e, building a kennel in your yard). It will never work. Leaving a dog unattended outside is a major NO NO. Recently I saw a sign at the Farmer's Market notifying dog owners that the asphalt was a dangerous 116 degrees, so even walking your dog outside in the Summer is dangerous unless done early morning or late evening. A much better idea is to walk the dog on your lawn but you must be present. We have large predators such as eagles, owls and coyotes who are always looking for a meal. Keep your pug safe in the air conditioning.

The best answer in TV for dog owners is a CYV and putting a dog door in the Lanai and sliding glass door. We have 2 Golden Retrievers and it works well. We never worry about being away from home for extended periods during the day and the dogs come and go (pun intended) as they please. Not that they are left alone regularly for long periods of time, but if we decide at the last minute to go out for dinner or catch a movie, we don't need to worry about coming home to any unwanted carpet adornments or they being left out in the weather.

It's not a perfect solution as dogs will tend to bring surprises back inside with them and if your dog loves the rain and playing in the mud like my female does, well it presents some additional challenges...

Hi Veronica - Welcome to TV

Our Pug Joey does very well at our Village home. We bring him out 1st thing in the morning (around 7-8am) where he stays about 5-10 minutes; then again around 11am and 4-5pm for a few minutes only if we are home; and again around 8-9pm. He always stay in our yard and with someone watching over him. Joey also enjoys late evening golf cart rides. Also remember to pick up your dog's poopy. Let me know if you have other questions about living here with a Pug. Best!
