Would appreciate any thoughts/suggestions you have on how I might best find some folks to play golf with. I'm an inconsistent player so I don't want to just wander out to a course and get randomly paired up. Would not be fair to the other person/people. Are lessons the best way to get into the game and find people at a similar skill level? Thanks for any help.

See if your new neighborhood has a group. We have one for our neighborhood that has players with handicaps ranging from 1 to 14 on the execs. LOL, we all are inconsistent golfers, just at different levels! If you're looking for a regular group, your neighbors are a good first step.

the Single Baby Boomers and Sumter Singles have lots of opportunities to golf that are recreational so you could participate--it's more for fun than competition. there's also a single golfers group:

Single Golfers of the Villages (SGV) is your best bet. They have 9 hole events and 18 as well and have some really nice social dinners outside of golf. ASGA only play 18 holes and are real competitive. SGV home page is:

hope you will also continue to watch this thread for other activities which you might enjoy joining, such as meet and greet get togethers....summer activities may slow down a bit but feel free to initiate something you might enjoy!
