We camped at the KOA in West Yellowstone,MT,about 5 minutes from the west gate.Nice campground.Only one campground in Yellowstone has hookups and that books up early. If you rough it sites are easier to get in the park.I recommend taking the north and south loop tours. Both are all day tours.A few firms offer these tours and they came to the KOA to pick you up in the morning.I would take the tours the first two days in Yellowstone. You get to see a lot of the park then you can schedule your time for the next 12 days. Our tour guides were great. The first was a young tree hugging gal from New York State and the 2nd was a local mountain man.Boy did they have different opinions about Yellowstone. This was a great trip for us.If you you are camping along the the way to Yellowstone, try these stops.
Mt Rushmore ,Black Hills.Google Fort Hays Tours,They have an all day tour of the black Hills including Mt Rushmore.
Deadwood has a KOA and a free ride to downtown Deadwood.
Devil's Tower. There is a KOA next to the national park.
Cody,Wy.Several campgrounds.Go to the rodeo.
The east gate to Yellowstone is about an hour from Cody.
Buy the National Park Pass at your first visit to a National Park. The pass is good for a year at all National Parks.
Have a nice trip,we did.
