Oh....my aching back!

It is time to replace the bed...mattress and all. Every morning is brutal getting out of bed and the back is protesting profusely....

So, I am looking to purchase a new bed, but it seems it would be easier and much less complicated to purchase a new car! Plus, a new bed is almost as expensive as a new car... At any rate...

Has anyone purchased one of the new power beds, where the head and foot raise or lower? These beds also have the air bladders that make the bed firmer or softer...like the sleep number bed...

Over the weekend, I was at the Relax in Comfort store in LSL and tried out one of their beds. It was a split king, with the power base. It was very comfortable. Reviews, online, are generally positive.

So my question....Does anyone have one of the Relax in Comfort beds? How do you like it? Would you buy the same bed again?

Ask if the foam type part retains body heat( think hot). That is what I have heard but not had one to say I experienced it.

About 8 months ago we bought a new TEMPUR Pedic bed from Mattress Firm. And yes, it almost cost as much as a car! Prior to buying this mattress, we had a Sealy Posturpedic. We found that with the beds that have the inner springs, the springs become non supportive after about 6 months or so, even though we bought a real firm mattress. So we went back to Mattress Firm and they were kind enough to let us exchange that spring mattress for the TEMPUR Pedic one, of course the TEMPUR bed was much more expensive. Anyhow, after about 6 months, that foam bed seem to relax way too much for us, giving us that sinking feeling once again. We like to sleep on top of a mattress, not feel like we are cradled by it. So we flipped the TEMPUR mattress over and the underside was like sleeping on the floor! The support was great, just no padding for comfort. So off we went to purchase a 1 1/2" mattress topper for some cushion and now the bed is perfect! So we ended up with an upside down mattress with a topper. And, these kinds of mattresses are very warm to sleep on. They do make one that has a cool top on it but of course it's more expensive and we felt we had enough money invested in a bed already. If you choose one of those adjustable beds make sure your bed frame is comparable with it. Not all bed frames are. We have a platform type bed frame with the drawers underneath it and the adjustable bed was not comparable with it so we couldn't get one. I hope this helps with your decision.

My back also alerts me as to when to buy a new bed/mattress. A couple of years ago I purchased a "Westin Heavenly" bed from Nordstrom's and really like it. They are used in Westin hotels so you could try one out by staying in a Westin.

When Relax in Comfort opened at LSL, three of my friends purchased the split king motorized beds and they love them! We had just recently purchased a FLO bed and love it. If I had seen R I C before I bought my Flo bed, it would have been something I would have considered seriously.

We have another mattress from RIC for our guest bed and it is very comfortable.
Has latex not memory type foam.

Two years ago I purchased a tempurpedic mattress with the gel , I love it and it doesn't make me feel to warm. Although, I sleep better with the ceiling fan on each night! It's a woman thing!!

We purchased 12” adjustable memory foam mattresses 3 years ago from Relax in Comfort. As mentioned, cost-wise it's akin to buying a small car so I wanted to build in some flexibility. Considering that we may downsize in the future, we elected to pay a bit more and get two twins rather than a split king to give more options in room arrangement. Also the mattresses are heavy! I don't go around moving mine but at least with a twin I don't need a crane to shift it around. Twins also allow each of us to choose his preferred position.

We like to read in bed so the ability to be more upright is much more comfortable than holding a book overhead (plus if one nods off, the book doesn't fall onto your nose).

Comfort-wise, we're pleased. Usually we sleep “flat” but occasionally I slightly raise my feet and head for a comfy cradle. Our remotes allow us each to program 4 custom positions.

The beds also have a massage (vibrating) function. After the newness wore off, we find we don't use this much.

The first time we left on a trip, I unplugged the beds along with the PC, TV, etc. Won't do that again! Reprogramming the two bed remotes so that a bed only responded to the signal from “its” remote was a bit complicated. We did it, and rewrote the directions in easy “steps” but we still haven't unplugged again.

Way back when we were in our 30's, 40's, and 50's (and not particularly hippie) we had a waterbed. Nothing fancy, just a king-size bladder filled with heated water. Maybe I just slept better then, but it was the most comfy sleep of all!

Most sleep therapists will tell you that you should do 2 things in bed: sleep and you know.


They do not recommend power beds if you are buying it for reading or watching tv etc. If you need the head raised a little for breathing issues or the feet elevated for circulatory reasons then that's good.


I know many people that are happy with their Sleep Number but I have no personal experience with one.

Back in 'the day' we had a waterbed too and I agree.....it was the BEST sleeping ever! As far as the adjustable beds, we have a king in MI and a queen in FL. Love them both as we usually watch a little TV before going to bed. Also, as someone said great for reading. One other thing we found out as we get older and have things happen to us, such as back issues etc. These beds are great for a little help;-) Once we bought a sleep number bed....UGH that went back within a week!

Thanks George.... Your comments are very characteristic of other comments I have read about that bed. I have not found a bad review yet! I went through about a 10 minute test drive of that bed in LSL and was very impressed with it. Right now, it's one of my top runners.

We have a sleep number bed and we love it. If I needed to buy another one, it would be a sleep number. We have had it for 2 years and it is still like the day we bought it !

I find it VERY difficult to change the fitted sheet on a split king. I don't have one but my parents did.

Does anyone have a Savvy Rest? It's 100p percent organic latex and even pricier. Debating between it (super comfortable) in a split top king adjustable vs the Comfortaire, also comfy. Relax in Comfort store in lake Sumter carry both. Mary

We plan on buying a sleep number bed when we need a new mattress.

Any foam pillow or mattress is hot. Really hot!

To me, the automatic beds (regardless of what each mfg. calls them) is like a hospital bed, which no matter what button you pushed, was never comfortable. In addition -- just another thing to malfunction.

Either Sealy or Stearns & Foster has always been my choice.

Sleep number is all we would have. It can be adjusted for individual comfort. Mine is far more firm than my husband's. If we need to adjust because we did too much physical activity, we can select another number.

My mother had a sleep number for many years. Our son and his wife still use the bed. We've found it lasts far longer than the traditional mattress. A little more expensive in the beginning, but in the long run saves money.
