Another opt out feature is needed for Obituaries.

You may be correct, but your timing just may make your post one of the most cynical and insensitive posts I have read on this site.
Whoa............
Pretty judgmental this morning, aren't we?

Perhaps the Admin could explain why it was felt to be necessary to start publishing obituaries here on TOTV.
I would also like to opt out if this is going to be a regular feature.

Good idea, Bogie! I agree with you!

As long as I don't see mine, I'm good!

Not crazy about seeing obituaries listed.
They are in the paper if anyone wants to see them.

When I read the first one, I thought it was a member of the Admin's family.

That's what I thought also.

Could they have been posted, somehow, in error?

Maybe one but I can't imagine all 3 of them.

Right. Perhaps with Administrator will advise.

These obits were linked to the Daily Sun. I thought that this forum operated independent of The Villages. I am confused by the apparent competition between TOTV and the new online Villages newsletter.
TOTV is a forum and not a newspaper, digital or otherwise. Once you become of jack of all trades, you are not a master of any.

I kind of agree after reading some of these posts.

Maybe they should be in a pull-down on the left hand side for those that are interested.

I remember reading that there is a substantial number of people nationally who go to the obituaries first when they get their paper.

Yep, my grandmother did that and always somehow found a connection.
She'd say something like "Oh, Maureen Kathleen's third cousin Mary's father-in-law James. It's a shame." Then out would come the hat and off a-wakin she'd go. I think wakes and confession were her social life.

Yes I was. I realized it right away and took down my reply, but obviously not before you saw it. But in my defense, I only saw the one obituary and your post. I thought someone in the Admins family was grieving and you were being insensitive. Only after I pushed "post" did I see the other obituaries. My apologies Bogie.

It seemed a bit odd to suddenly start getting Obits as threads.
Thanks to Admin for the quick explanation.

I think you are right.
When we were children in the 1950's, both of our Polish & Ukrainian mothers would often say that the old pani's or starsza pani's would make the rounds of all the "wakes", not just for the gossip or news of what the poor soul died from.........but to enjoy the repast that followed the funeral. In other words, the luncheon. Guess it was social, as this was before the time of t.v./soap operas/internet chat rooms/Facebook, etc. Plus FREE FOOD.
Ditto for the Italian aunts, who would mention the same stuff about their nonna's......going to the wakes/funeral parlor. Not to mention, also going to daily mass. It was a ritual they never missed, probably to get some peace & quiet from all the dozens of kids they had at home. Candlelight, organ music, incense, the repetition of the rosary beads was their "escape". Again, the "repast" following the funerals......a social event. Most definitely.
Nowadays, many people no longer have the four days & nights "laid out". If any.
Most people I know care very little for even showing up at the "viewing"; it probably reminds them too much of their own mortality. So, in hindsight, at least our elders did pay their respects, in their own fashion.
By the way, I still read the obituaries.......as every single day lately there is someone we know or knew, or else related to someone we know now............or via our grown adult kids.
I usually write out a sympathy card to send snail mail.....or if it's a close friend or their family member, we send flowers. Lots of ties that bind when you reside in a small town for 44 years.
Lately, so many people who are much younger than we are.........are in the obits. Sad to say.
But you are correct, it was social in our gram's time.....
