A fourth of July hotdog eating contest turned tragic when a man choked to death on a hotdog.

These stupid contests are promoted by industry and only exist for advertising purposes. The contests were mentioned on the radio every hour on the hour like it was news. But when someone choked to death in one of the contests, I never heard about it on the news. I heard about it on a late-night radio talk-show.

I agree.......stupid contest. But it was reported on the news, including the AP, ABC, CBS, Fox and a number of newspapers.

Yes, I don't believe in frivolous lawsuits but this would not be frivolous in my opinion. I hope the family of the man will bring a 10 or 20 million dollar lawsuit against the promoters of the contest.

I don't have TV and I didn't hear about it on the radio news and I didn't see it in the Daily Sun either.

You would think that they would have a few Heimlich experts at these contests in case of choking. barf

Not if you add yellow mustard, onions and relish in the right combination

It would be a shame to see a lawsuit for this. He made the choice to stuff himself with hot dogs. Grown up people certainly know they could choke if they choose to stuff themselves like that.

That would be the definition of frivolous.

I would never sue if I choked one or both of my pickles.

I hope he had to sign some kind of a no-fault claim (or what ever they call it).

It just happened to be a hot dog, a TOFU eating contest might have had the same ending.

Man dies in Custer hot dog eating contest (http://rapidcityjournal.com/news/local/man-dies-in-custer-hot-dog-eating-contest/article_2ea4cd5b-becc-5290-b4eb-3cf4c6e18386.html)

The article mentions a man in FL dying from a contest that involved eating live cockroaches. I had not heard of that before.

I do not think that people should be able to sue when they are fully aware of the risks and careful precautions are taken by the promoter. It looks like they had paramedics on site.

Why? Was he somehow forced into entering the contest?

If a lawsuit is brought, it would be about a frivolous as it gets.

Although this guy relished this kind of contest, it's obvious that he just couldn't cut the mustard. I think that really is the meat of the matter.

Mamma Cass did not chocked to death on a ham sandwich. Mama Cass died in her sleep from a heart attack.

No she didn't. It was a hard attack brought on by fatty myocardial degeneration.

doug: your right. I went to Wikipedia and discovered that because a half eaten ham sandwich was found on her night stand police initially believed she choked to death on it and the story took on a life of its own and that's what I remembered . apparently her hard hitting diet weakened her creating the onset of the heart attack. Mea culpa

I have an avid follower of sports since I was seven years old.

How anyone can consider eating x amount of hotdogs in x minutes is a sport, in way beyond my comprehension.

The lawsuit would be frivilious. IMHO

Another case of a family trying to blame someone else, for their troubles.

No one forced him to choke down hotdogs.

True, but he was given a monetary incentive to do something potentially hazardous.

What if I offer $10,000 to the person who walks the fastest all the way around a narrow ledge up near the top of a ten story building? If people fall off and die, would that be okay too?

This was no urban legend but the truth. Our main employer is our hospital, thus word gets around. Makes one very cautious each time they eat something like ham (or a hot dog).

I'd be cautious when I went to that hospital knowing that "word gets around".

Not an infrequent occurrance especially in children. I know 2 that died from same; one 13 in a school cafeteria & the other 6 in a park. Always cut it lengthwise when serving ANYONE. I am sure they will sue somebody but they do come with a WARNING LABEL.

Is it true they took the body away in the Weinermobile?

I hope the family of the man will bring a 10 or 20 million dollar lawsuit against the promoters of the contest. And if they win, I hope they're rewarded what they deserve; a weeks supply of Ball Park Franks, a squeeze bottle of mustard and a pack of fire crackers so they can celebrate their victory, and NOT some asinine unwarranted dollar amount!

Are you hungry for a hot dog? a Big JUICY Nathans, or Hebrew National, with raw onion, yellow mustard and maybe a drop of catsup and some sauerkraut on a fresh soft hotdog bun? Do you want it steamed or charbroiled? Take little bites. Little horseradish too??????

If he did sign a "no-fault" claim, my hope is that it would be thrown out of court because the contest provided a financial enticement to go against the hotdog warning label.
