I saw a phone number along with "name unavailable" and stupidly answered the phone. Someone identified themselves as our nephew and knew our name. When we began to question them, they hung up. I tried to call back and received a message along the lines of " I am unable to connect you to that number - please call back or check the number. "
Who do you call to find out where that number is coming from?

Wow. Sounds like you were all set up to be a victim of the scam where the caller pretends to be your relative in trouble...and don't tell anyone....and wire money.
Thank God you questioned them and thank God you didn't get taken. My sweet, dear 90 year old aunt was taken for $4000 when she thought it was her grandson in jail in Canada after supposedly having a car accident in someone elses car...

You could try to google the number.
It may show some info.

When the caller or you hangs up, dial *69 and it will tell you who called last.

No, I"ve tried that. All it tells you is unavailable.

They were using a "spoof card" or spoof box.
I'm sure there are "people" who can track it, but you're not one of them. Googling the number and *69 aren't going to work, you can't even really block the number because it's usually not a real number, it's a virtual one.

I get "name unavailable" calls all the time. I figure if their unavailable, then so am I.
I generally will Google search a number I don't recognize and often will pull up results where others had the same call and they share who it was.
One current scam is scammers that hang up before a person answers. People are often curious to know what call they missed and will call back and be racking up long distance charges.

The "nephew or grandchild scam" has been going on for quite a while in senior communities. It is a shame to hear when some well meaning person gets taken in by these thieves.
