I was married for a quarter century and I've got a lawyer for a daughter, so I knew how to deal with these situations: Stay close to the bone, nothing but the facts, ma'am. I crossed my arms, leaned on her railing, and listened to it squeal as the sheet metal screws tried to pull loose from the doublewide's aluminum skin. “You want this job?”

“No.” She looked past me toward the highway. She didn't have any shoes on, and her toes were clutching the threadbare carpet like cat's claws in an attempt to keep her from spinning off into the ether. She was a little below average height and weight, olive complexion, with short black hair that kind of stood up in pure indignity. She'd been crying, and her eyes were the color of tarnished gold, and the only thing I could think of doing was to open the screen door and hold her. I had had a lot of problems of my own of late, and I figured we could both just stand there and cry for a while.

I looked down at my brown rough-outs and watched the dirt glide across the porch in underlining streaks. “Nice wind we've been having.” She didn't say a word. “Hey, you want my job?”

She laughed. “Maybe.”

I am reading the first novel featuring Longmire by Craig Johnson and am surprised at the difference in the appearance of some of these characters.

The series has http://kateesackhoff.com/ as Deputy Vic Moretti. http://www.aetv.com/longmire/cast/katee-sackhoff The above excerpt is from Craig Johnson's book The Cold Dish http://www.craigallenjohnson.com/.

I enjoy the series as well as the books. I am also surprised at the differences.

The biggest deviation between author and screenwriter I can recall is Forrest Gump. There is an implied "suspension of disbelief" burden on a reader or viewer, but that book tested me while the movie entertained me.

I will have to check that out at some time. Forrest Gump was one of my favorite movies from that year of 1994.

The biggest movie vs book character difference I have found recently is Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher. In the many books, Reacher is 6 foot 5 inches, 240 pounds of all muscle, former Army MP, and a very quite and laid back silent type. Would never have picked Cruise to play him. Maybe Steven Seagal or Vince Vaughan.

He was a strange choice but Lee Child went with it as Cruise showed Reacher as an unstoppable force in the movie. I wrote Tom Cruise a large number of e-mails about my victims/survivors of crimes access to practical information 224 613 project back in the early 2000s through 2003 or so. Not sure if he read any of them but the e-mail address seemed to be good for him for years and he never blocked any of my many messages. He has received a bum rap for his religious beliefs to a certain extent by talking about subjects he did not seem extremely well versed in at that time. Celebrities like Tom Crusie can and do bring attention to various problems but it is usually up to the experts, other media and the grass roots to do something about this problem whatever it is. There is way too much dependence on drugs in certain segments of this society. The Scientologists take it to an extreme though but seemingly to question the value of all mind chemical altering drugs. http://www.scientology.org/faq/scientology-attitudes-and-practices/scientology-view-on-drugs-and-medicine.html

I am just saying I am kind of biased about Tom Cruise given how many e-mails I sent him. Edge of Tomorrow is one of the best Sci-Fi movies I have seen in quite a while but it did poorly at the US Box Office. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/edge_of_tomorrow/
