just watching the major news coverage as usual in an incident of this scope...all one learns is what they do not know.

And what is amazing is with what little or nothing in the way of facts they can go on for hours.

And the foot shuffling in Washington has already started as well.

They are all masters at making a banquet out of a ham sandwich....even if they do not have the ham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, indications are that this plane was shot down by this terrorist group. I would hope that seeing as how 23 Americans were possibly murdered by terrorists, our leaders are discussing what action should be taken if this is indeed found to be the truth.

Let's hope that discussion here doesn't start to sound like what the news stations are reporting.....really nothing....speculation and at this time, little else.

What action should the USA take precisely for this non-US plane presumably shot down in a civil war?

The reason I posted initially (after seeing the breaking news as we were having our lunch) is that, number one I am of Ukrainian ancestry via my mom and maternal grandparents......secondly, we both thought it was a double tragedy following that other Malaysian passenger jet's disappearance a few months back........plus we know a lot of people who fly to the Asian countries on business.........not to say that any of the passengers are known to us. Just heard they are working on notifying the families first, before they publish who these Americans might be.

Any large passenger jet that goes down in such a fashion is shocking news to many people..........almost unheard of to be struck by a missile......although my husband recalled a few earlier incidents of planes
being shot down by missiles.........the Russians shot down a Korean passenger jet in the '80s????? Also, we shot a Iranian passenger plane in the 90's?????? We apologized. He remembers this.
I do not.

Our own adult kids fly a lot.........so again, this is of interest to us. As another just mentioned, if it is a terrorist attack (?) it is of interest to all of us.

We were watching Scott Pelley ; he did a great job of keeping it interesting while Anderson Cooper stammered as usual.......we kept flipping from station to station. FOX also covered it well..........

As far as it being a terrorist attack, the Russians say they did not do it, nor the Ukrainian separatists (coerced by Russia)........but it was a RUSSIAN MISSILE.........that struck a Boeing 777 passenger jet. 295 onboard.

The Russian missiles are used by the Ukrainian Army.....however, the Russian missiles are also used by the Ukrainian Separatists who are coerced by Russia.

I do thank you for posting this SC....I didn't have TV or news on computer on so I was unaware. It is indeed tragic, innocent people have died.
There is lots to do to determine exactly what caused this large plane to plummet to earth. Emotions are highly charged at this point....now it is time for science to help determine exactly what happened.

I do understand your concern about family flying, my son flies quite a bit. Mothers always worry no matter how old our babies are.

Prayers for all who have suffered because of this, as well as all of humanity are offered.

What action should the USA take precisely for this non-US plane presumably shot down in a civil war?

The US has offered and Ukraine has accepted the offer for help in this investigation. The US can share it's collected intelligence with interested parties, plus the Boeing people will be very instrumental in collecting data. Teams of aviation experts are already on their way.

I think we should issue travel restrictions to the area and no longer import caviar and mail-order brides. (Sorry if this sounds too political.)

I echo that prayer. There were three infants onboard, plus other children.
All innocents. Brings the death toll from 295 to 298. No one begins their flight expecting to be hit by a surface to air missile....

You are very welcome. I totally "get" how you feel with your son constantly flying. Same here. Like George Clooney in "Up in the Air". Airport to airport, coast to coast.

Has anyone noticed this numerical sequence?

In my humble opinion, a civil war on the ground does not excuse the murder of 300 innocent people including possibly 23 American citizens, who were not part of that civil war.

I think that as a country we have an obligation to find out what happened to our citizens.

As far as all the people saying that we should focus on the victims, I'm not sure exactly what that means. We should think about and pray for them and their families?

We certainly all are going to do that, but taking actions such as investigating what has happened and if this was murder, holding those who perpetrated it, responsible, finding, apprehending and punishing them is the best that we can do for the families and loved ones of the victims.

Other than that, I don't know what, "focus on the victims and their families", means.

From what I last heard, there were most likely no Americans on that plane. It is a tragic thing BUT not our fight. Helping investigate is good but it is NOT our place to apprehend or punish. The USA should stay out of this civil war.

We were dragged into the Vietnam Civil War and over 58,000 Americans were killed. We went into Iraq over a lie and over 4,500 Americans were killed.

Let's stay out of this.

Malaysia Plane Crash Victims Included About 100 AIDS Conference Attendees, Report Suggests (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/17/who-malaysia-plane-crash-victims-aids-_n_5597547.html)

It seems like a lot of the passengers who died in the recent Malaysia aircrash were AIDS researchers. That's a terrible blow as well to the progress of finding a cure to AIDS.

The news media was all over this story like flies on ****. Immediately speculating as to what our response should be before we even know who was responsible or what possible motive they could have had.
Whether or not American citizens were on board should be immaterial. 295 human lives were taken.

While this is certainly a tragedy one has to wonder why in the world are commercial airlines routing planes directly over a known war zone? If you go downtown into the hood in the dark of night and then get beaten and robbed the first thing the cops are going to ask you is "what were you doing there in the first place?"

Tragedy sells newspapers and gets ratings for ad revenue. Ever see the 1951 movie with Kirk Douglas about the man trapped in a cave? http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/great-movie-ace-in-the-hole-1951

Last I heard there were possibly 23 Americans on board. But I understand what you're saying about staying out of a civil war. However I think that although this action may be loosely related to that civil war is not actually a part of the civil war.

My older brother Robert has pointed this out to me repeatedly since the movie Outbreak came out on 3-12-1995 about looking for meaning in patterns of numbers around you. This even has a name Apophenia-- Apophenia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apophenia)

I still was elated when that Russian figure skater received that 224.59 score at the Olympics in Sochi. http://espn.go.com/olympics/winter/2014/figureskating/story/_/id/10492377/2014-sochi-olympics-current-figure-skating-scoring-system-fosters-controversy-confusion I know it sounds bonkers. And, it probably really ****ed off a lot of South Koreans rooting for their skater.

But for us very religious people who look for meaning in everything I think that God with all these tragedies has some "splaining to do!" as does Russia. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/Fisher+Moscow+explaining+wake+Malaysia+Airlines+pl ane/10039503/story.html

That 100 Aids research doctors were going to Kuala

Bill Clinton is the keynote speaker. What a loss!
So many sad stories!
