W8.1 Prompts for Password

The whole story is long and involved since I have been working on the problem for a few days but I will try to keep it short.

We are talking about a Windows 8.1 system upgraded from a Windows 8 system.

When you come out of sleep, you are asked for a password. I followed all of the instructions and went into the Control Panel/Power Options and set sleep to Never. We no longer go to sleep. When I set the monitor to 15 minutes to conserve power, all is good. When I move the mouse to get the monitor to come on, it asks for the password.

Does anyone know what I have to/reset to get rid of the password requirement?

I have Googled and tried several of the suggestions and it STILL wants a password.

Personally, I would like to line up all of these Microsoft security guys and blow their a**es away (sorry gun control people) for designing something so stupid for PC owners that are in their own house. The reason being is that if you CANNOT remember your password, you have to reinstall Windows. Really smart.

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that you initially set a password when you first setup the computer. As far as I know, all of the recent versions of Windows work similar to what you are describing. This is a security feature to stop or greatly limit the ability of someone else to use your computer, or gain access to any sensitive data on it.
If you really do not want this security, I believe that you can go to the 'user accounts' and eliminate the password from your account. This should eliminate your problem.
I do not suggest that, as anyone finding your computer would then have access to EVERYTHING.
Personally, I use 1 password of the power on password, and a separate password for the windows password. Most of the time when I open up the PC I just need to enter the Windows password, if sufficient time has elapsed for the machine to shut down or hibernate, that I have to enter the power on password first.

Well, my win 8.1 desktop only requires a password when I first boot it up...not when it is awakened from sleep or is inactive to where screen saver kicks in.

I imagine I set that up when I first configured the computer, but, don't know where that setting is.

So, it can be done....

Thanks. I understand your point but if I have a desktop in my house that only me and my spouse use, I really do not care about that level of security. All I want to do is use my PC. I have tried everything that I have found on Google and it still wants the password. If my PC was available to others (a laptop that I took places) I would agree that I might need some kind of security but if the PC never leaves the house, I think it is over kill.

Do you think that if I forget my password that I should have to reinstall windows? This is one of the most stupidest things I can think of. What are these Microsoft quacks thinking of? Sorry to rant but I think the level of security that the Microsoft people have designed is terrible.

I bought a new laptop a couple of weeks ago and I followed their instructions and put a password on it. I wrote the password down. After installing the MS fixes I rebooted. It asked for the password and I put it in. It did not like it. I tried my other passwords and it did not like them. I chatted with the PC purchaser and they said I had to restore the system to its beginning state and start over because there was no way to bypass the password. Why should I be held captive to MY PC? I restored it and put a null password in and then did all of the stuff I had already done. Then I did all of the processes to bypass the password on sleep.

I just cannot find the right place to get this PC to ignore the password check.

Thanks. I have done that on all of my PCs. For some reason I cannot fix it on this PC. I am at my wits end on this one. I have Googled it and tried all of the fixes and nothing works. The unfortunate thing is that it is not my PC and I have to travel to try some of the fixes. And since it is not mine, I am hesitant to try some of the fixes since I do not want to damage the PC.

Since it is so annoying to you, it might be worthwhile to take it to one of the computer club people for a fix. The one I use, Peter Cronas, charges $30/hr if you come to his house, $50/hr if he comes to yours. You could look him up in the TV phone book.

I agree with the previous post, and get professional help with this problem. I am sorry that you are having so much trouble. I had a Toshiba that I forgot the passwords, and I was able to find the magic jumper to reset the password to nothing, and restore operation without any passwords, by the way I found this on YOUTUBE, try going to youtube, and type in lost password windows 8.1 or lost password on brand X PC and see what you get.

c. If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.
d. User Account pop windows will appear.
e. Uncheck the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer box, and click/tap on OK.

Thanks. I read in one of the Google hits that this does not work for this problem. The guy I am working with on this problem tried one of the other fixed and it seems to have worked. I will be going over there tomorrow (7/22) to verify that all is well. I will post the fix that was used.

This is not a normal Microsoft password check. It is coming from some other program.
