Does anyone know where to get the Recycling bags for Monday when recycling starts. I have tried Walgreen's, Publix, Lowes etc and they don't have them- Called The Sun and the re-cycler and they couldn't help.

Any ideas?

We had the same problem; tried for over a week to find them at Walmart (both), Publix, Walgreens, etc. Someone suggested Ace Hardware and low and behold, we got them there. They had plenty.

About an hour ago we picked them up at Publix on 466. They had quite a few.

Publix @ Southern Trace still had some at about 1:30 today. The sign said to take only one box, but a lady infront of me had two boxes and was not challenged!

I bo't them yesterday at Colony Plaza Publix. This was my first try---didn't realize there was a shortage. There were still some on the shelf and no one was rushing around to get them. I calmly asked a clerk if that was the only size (12 pk) and she said yes.

I was ready to buy the larger size, since we have to have them.

7:20 p.m. - Just got back from Publix in Southern Trace, Rt. 466. They opened a new pallet as I was leaving and were offering multiple boxes on request.

I don't think we can use any clear plastic bag. Next time I go to Sam's that is where I am going to buy mine.

I have yet to find these bags in TV stores visited in past week. (Walmart, Ace Hardware, 2 Publix) Can anyone tell me about them? Are they biodegradable? How much weight can they handle? This may be an issue if they get loaded up with telephone books, magazines, catalogs, etc.

If they are just clear pastic non-biodegardable 13 gallon bags, why couldn't TV supply each home with stickers that could be placed on outside of bag indicating contents are recyclables and let us use any plastic bags?

Reminds me of our Town up north that decided they would continue to pick up leaves at curbside in the Fall only if leaves were placed in Town-supplied (at a price) plastic bags. After program started we learned that the bags were not biodegradable, so the Recycling Dept. Workers picked up the bags and then broke them before dumping the leaves into the trucks. At end of shift they had to dispose of all of the broken bags they had accumulalted into trash containers that ultimately went to landfill.

As I have observed the practice in TV of only accepting trash in plastic bags, I wonder how many of these black bags will be around for hundreds of years in the landfills. Now will we add thousands of clear plastic bags to the ecology each week if they are not biodegradable?

Seems to me a better way would have been a covered trash container to hold recyclables. Wheel it out the evening before pick up and then wheel it back into garage once emptied.

Handi - There was an article in the Feb 28 Daily Sun that answers all of your questions for recycling. They are 13 gallon Kitchen type bags. You cannot put more than 30 lbs in one of the bags. Using hard containers would leave an unsightly scene if everyone did not immediately bring the containers back in. With the containers the top might come off and the recycleables would blow all over the neighborhood.

I am not a recycling advocate.. Just stating the facts.

Finally located bags ths morning at Publix, Spanish Springs Store. Found no mention on package indicating the bags are biodegradable.

So if I understand The Plan.

-We have a slight increase in our monthly bills from VCCDD Utililities for non-mandatory recycling.

-We must purchase TV approved non- biogradable clear plastic bags for about 23 cents each and thousanads of these bags will now be added to the trash stream/landfill as they are not recyclable.

-There will be no reduction in trash pick-up fees to reflect the reduced amount of trash being picked up and sent to County Landfill.

-There will be additional trucks purchased and crews hired to pick up recyclables in our attractive clear plastic bags which will wind up in Orlando, where things will be separated.

Gee this sounds like a great way to handle things. Did I miss anything?

I am truly a big fan of recycling. In California, I used the smallest trash bin they had. My recycling bin was the largest and nearly always overflowed. Both were picked up weekly.

Personally, I think the way TV is handling garbage, grass and recycling is just plain dumb. The plastic bags are not recyclable. The black bags have an estimated 500-1,000 life span and that's with them being photodegradable (the sun will break them down to microscopic units in about that amount of time and that, of course, implies that the sun will be able to hit them). The white bags 500-750 years. The clear bags 250-500 years. The large paper bags frequently seem to biodegrade in your driveway on a wet night. I'm impressed that our garbage men are willing to pick up the mess they make.

In my community in California there was a local law about leaving bins (bins being the rolling type -- all recyclables mixed together in their brown bin) out for more than 24 hours. You left them out and someone complained, the police would come and you would get a citation. The first time was a warning. The second time was a fine was $25.00 and went up from there. So far as I know, no one left their bins out more than once. Seems like neighborhood watch could do something similar here. And if you know you're not going to pick up your bin the next morning because you're out of town, how hard is it to ask a neighbor in the friendliest community in Florida?

I miss my bins. They were clean, animals didn't get in them, a lot easier to get to the curb and they didn't add waste by requiring bags (even though I did put my garbage in paper bags in the bins).

Not sure I agree with your facts. I see many unsightly plastic bags put at end of driveways several days before pick up when residents are headed out of town. Then when there is a holiday on pick up days, they sit there for few extra days in some neighborhoods. There have also been posts about critters getting into and ripping plastic bags apart leaving a mess for someone to pick up.

I have lived in areas where folks used covered containers with secure covers. The point I wanted to make was that adding more plastic bags to the environment sort of defeats the recycling goal. A secure container is reusable for years, adds nothing to the landfills and in many cases those same containers are made from recycled items.

To the point about them being unsightly, they come in a variety of colors, and can be painted with flowers, etc on them.

I don't present this as facts, only my opinion.

I am waiting to see just how the recyclable material is handled once it gets to it's destination before I change how I dispose of trash/garbage. If it all goes the same way and then sorted then why bother? Chalk up the $1.75 per month as a contribution.

May I suggest that everyone who dislikes how TV presently handles trash collect and/or dislikes how recycling will be done, everyone who misses their bins, everyone who is unhappy about the types of bags being used, all get together and form a committee. Approach the developer or the CDDs and volunteer to work with whatever trash and recycling companies are available to develop a more efficient system, one more to your liking. You may have to approach governmental bodies in Marion, Lake, and Sumter Counties and Lady Lake, but no big deal. If you are strong in your convictions, you can handle it.

They are not supposed to put the bags out until the night before. If my neighbor is going to be gone they ask me to put their bag out the night before. That is the rule. If you have someone that does it repeatedly, call the TV cops :cop:- whoever they might be. : :dontknow:

Where I lived in NJ I had two large plastic garbage cans devoted to recyclables. When they were full I dragged them up to the curb on recycling day. I also bundled my newspapers in 12 inch stacks and dragged them to the curb. In NJ recycling was mandatory.

Instead of saying just stating the facts I should said I was regurgitating what the paper said.

I was very happy putting everything into the big black bag when I got here. I was told that the recycling was done at the other end. That was fine with me and still is.

We now pay $1.47 plus $.25 per bag I use for recycling. >:(

Not a fan of recycling. ??? ??? ???

This recycling system will probably change as they figure out how to improve it. Hopefully everyone will give it a try.

The bags are the biggest complaint I have. We got some last week at Ace. Too $$$ just to throw out trash.

Clarification of items to be recycled is needed. I called the customer service number and was told that Styrofoam can not be recycled even if it has a recycle symbol. Also any plastics that go in the microwave can not be recycled. Also cardboard boxes have to go in the regular trash... It makes it difficult to know what qualifies.

It will be a learning experience for all.

can't participate if we can't conveniently buy the special bags... this has been very poorly handled by stores, recycling co and tv. think i'll cancel my auto pay of bill so i can withhold the 1.47 charge for a recycling service i can't use.
