Redheads - Who is a good cosmetologist for hair color?

I'm appealing to our fellow Redheads.

I've enjoyed being a redhead all my life, and now that I've moved to The Villages I'm having trouble finding a local cosmetologist in or near The Villages who has a talent for properly coloring auburn / redheads. I know that auburn is a difficult color to perfect and would appreciate any recommendations or suggestions.

Darn, I just saw this thread and was hopeful that you received a good referral.

I too am a natural redhead and have been coloring it for about 10 yrs now. My stylist in Utah wrote out the "recipe" for the color she used and gave it to me. So I need to make some calls and see who uses the product line she used and take a chance.

She colored my hair or the past 8 yrs now and I shall really miss her. She is a sweetheart as well as a great hair stylist.

Paid an "arm and leg " back home ...learn to do it myself since it had to be done and I did not have a stylist yet...
Just buy the same name company/ kit ,following the instructions it will last as long as the stylist puts on...
This information is for any color of hair...
So your asking... am I a red ,brunette ,or blond headed blogger ..

Natural redheads fade in intensity. When you color your hair...the reds are difficult as we age. They too fade AND to make it worse our "natural grey" hairs will sometimes (or many times) not absorb the color. So you may have to have a color consultation with a colorist to see what will be best for you. I don't have any suggestions beyond this.

I have found a great hairdresser and she was referred to me by someone with beautiful dark red hair. The stylist is Jessica Collette. Jessica works two days a week at JQ Hair and Nails, 8756 SE 165th, Mulberry Lane. She has also opened her own salon in Lady Lake and will continue working in both places. Salon Chioma is known to give good coloring. The owner used to do training for Redken. I highly recommend them. I get my cuts there but color my own hair. I use the formula my salon up north used, but Michael can do a great job as well. He also knows how to help prevent red from fading.

Redken looked like red kool-ade, not a good look! I found a gal that works at TV Health on Pinellas that has great color and she gave me her hairdresser's name. I have talked with the hairdresser on the phone and she is buying the colors I need (combination of 3) I have an appt at the end of the week. I hope she works out. I will report back. I was almost ready to let it all grow out, I keep it very short , so it almost IS grown out....But I just don't think I am ready for that!
Natural Redheads color fades into a dull flat blonde. Not true grey and not that stunning silver. I really don't know where to go from here. But I will check out the hairdresser and report back.

Hi while I am not a natural redhead I have been doing my hair red for many years now. I agree Redkin reds are awful. I use Matrix moved here with my formula. since I have gotten more grey the formula has had to be adapted but I am pleased with mine I go to Salon St. T as many salon here only use Redkin.

I said I would report back, so here I am.

Underwhelmed....But I will say, I had her use 1/3 base color, 1/3 bleach (or whatever they use for highlights) and 1/3 my fading red. So it is probably my fault, not hers.

She suggested using the base (combo of 3 colors) with just highlights and covering all. I probably should have done that, as the Blonde highlights are much too subtle. Not as much contrast as with just highlights and low lights. That fading red just decreases the contrast, so it almost looks like I had just a few lowlights put in. No Bueno!

I will give her another try, but I can't really recommend her at this point.

I also wish I knew how to foil my own hair. IS THERE A CLUB FOR THAT?????

Dotti, so sorry that you had that experience. I've tried Cal's for color a few times and I believe they use Joico products... well the end result is multiple splotched colors of different reds throughout. I would not recommend Cal's for redheads either.

A couple people mentioned using Matrix color products successfully for redheads... does anyone know who uses that product around here?

I went to "cutter's corner" on 441 close to intersection with 466 by the Lady Lake Library.

Some of the stylists there do use Matrix which is what my hairdresser at home used too.

You might find some one there, I just can't reccommend the gal who did mine. I will try her again with a different strategy. Chunkier color and brighter blonde next time.
