A pair of Villagers was arrested after they allegedly stole a case of beer from a convenience store.
Lady Lake police were called to the Circle K North at 3 La Grande Blvd. in The Villages in the early morning hours of July 30 where a clerk reported that a man and woman had stolen the beer.
The clerk told police that a man came into the convenience store and said he wanted to buy a case of beer. The clerk told the man it was after 2 a.m. and beer cannot be sold at that hour, according to the arrest report. A woman who had entered the store with the man tried to distract the clerk by showing her a puppy, the arrest report indicated.
The man walked out of the store with a case of Natural Ice beer and placed it in his golf cart, the report said. The clerk followed him out of the store and watched him drive away in the golf car with two female companions, the report said.
The clerk told police the male had lacerations to his forehead and police recalled there had been a medical call the previous day involving an intoxicated man in the 1200 block of Dustin Drive on the Historic Side of The Villages.
Police went to the home on Dustin Drive and located 42-year-old John D. McCrea and 40-year-old Charm A. Gilbert. The case of beer was still in the golf cart, the arrest report noted. Police took photos of the pair and showed them to the store clerk who identified them as the ones who had been in the store and left with the beer in the golf cart.
The pair were booked at the Lake County Jail on charges of retail theft.
Records indicate it was a second offense for both McCrea and Gilbert.
They are scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 13 in Lake County Court.

Good thing they weren't charged in Sumter County. That judge would have them serving 25-life in the Florida State Pen.

A police 'chase' with the golf cart would have been a history maker for TV, and a safe one probably at that hour. LOL

Maybe one of the Orlando or Tampa TV choppers could have covered it live.
