Was talking with a gentleman at Arby's and he told me about his friend being confronted in the parking lot. Appears there were 4 blacks and one approached him as he went to his car and told him to drop his wallet. The one being robbed hit the person and broke window in car and other's ran off. Cops arriving said that the 4 had been involved in 4 separate incidences in that area close to Best Buy
Strange you never hear any of this in the Daily Sun

What's strange to me is you don't comment on the good deeds that are written about in
the Daily Sun. The Sun is not a NY Post type of paper. I for one see no need to know about every misdeed that happens in our area. If you want to keep up on crime, why not get a police scanner and listen to it all. Our paper tries to appeal to everyone in general. Because it focuses on good deeds and not mayhem is to their credit. If you want to be critical, complain about something they "did" write not something they "didn't".

As a 43-year newspaper editor, retired in 1996, I can tell you the job of every good newspaper: Hold up a mirror to its community. If it happens, you report it. Crime beats have been a part of newspapers since crimes were committed. The very definition of news is to report the unusual. Unusually good or unusually bad. I would think that those who live in The Villages, permanently or over the winter, would want to know where the crimes are being committed so they know where they need to be more cautious than at other places. No place on earth is perfect, not even the marvelous The Villages. We can't be ostriches.

I haven't seen this posted on **************.com, either. As far as news goes, I prefer to know the good as well as the bad.

I don't need every incident to be printed in the DS. I don't need that to be cautious, where ever I am at, in and around TV.
So far this incident is just hearsay..........................

You're upset because the sun didn't print a story you heard from a complete stranger? I didn't read anything about this in the "other" on-line paper either, and they report all the crime stories in the area. Maybe we should validate our information before complaining about a cover up. If it really did occur, then I would agree with you that if there is a crime spree that is endangering the community, even the sun should be reporting it.

A much better question is why it didn't make it into the news for Lake County.

The poster Mountaineer has it right on!
Just report the news as it comes down... here in The Villages as well..
Lets not choose what news gets reported or not reported. That is not fair
or balanced. I want all the news... if I choose not to read the story thats OK... same as books in a store... but please do not get into what goes into our newspapers... If the story is not true, then of course it will not be a story.

I myself, certainly want to know about incidents like this, so when I'm in these areas, I can take more caution!!!! With the population in this area (percentage wise) being seniors, they are good pickings for these cowards. I say keep posting articles in this nature, that concern all of us, and if true, hopefully they are arrested soon.

I think it's a public service for our local paper to let its community know of crimes/criminals in The Villages and our nearby shopping centers. It makes people become much more aware of their surroundings and keeps them alert. Who cares about the good deeds that are highlighted each day. That's not the topic.

Does somebody have to tell us to be aware and alert? I for one don't need my hand held.

So, four guys come up to rob one person and that one person punches one of the four and they all run away? C'mon!
And a friend of a friend whose first cousin was told by some guy in the parking lot...

So now we have another "hearsay" story with no timeline( when- last week -last month-last year?) and not reported by any newssource that can be quoted. Why do we want to create this kind of dialog?
Seems we are disappointed is there is not bad stuff to talk about!

Nowhere have I read that the Daily Sun is intended to be a full-service newspaper. It is a "good news" and community activity oriented publication targeted at Senior Disney World residents and vacationers. It is what it is. For the price that is charged, I do not see how anybody could feel entitled to ask for more. Do you complain to Readers Digest when they fail to cover the Olympics?

I was going to complain to Readers Digest about their abysmal Olympic coverage, but then I changed doctors. The new one has Sports Illustrated in their office so I steamed the stamp off the envelope and saved $.49.

As a second thought, is there even still such a thing as a Readers Digest?

So no merit to this possible issue?...if we all posted what goes on in our hometowns, no one would sleep. I don't worry about things I can not change.

That looks like a great site, thank-you but.....
I'm having trouble with the site. I'm just trying to see the local crime. Do I need to sign up for email alerts to use the service? I get this message.

Nawww. Don't sign up. Read here on this forum about crime committed and not reported. Every once in awhile it is true and it gives us something to worry about.

would you want your loved one going to Arby's and NOT know that robbery happened?

The Daily Sun is a great source for keeping up on what's going on in The Villages as far as recreation, entertainment and human interest stories.
I don't know of anyone who sees it as a true newspaper. I don't think that it was ever intended to be.
There are many other outlets that cover the hard news in The Villages. One is an online newspaper that, for some reason unbeknownst to most of us, we're evidently not allowed to mention on this forum.
If you're looking for the hard news in the Daily Sun, you are looking in the wrong place. If you don't want what their selling, don't buy it.
As far as crime goes, we have one of the lowest crime rates in the world. But that doesn't mean that there is no crime. We do have some undesirables living amongst us. I know of a few in my own neighborhood and they scare me. So we still have to be on alert, just not as much so as if we were living in a large metropolitan area. Just use common sense.

We dont even know whether this really happened. Someone met someone who told them someone was robbed by 4 guys, and single handedly fought them off.
No news reports in any media(yet cited). I cant believe that this is a conspiracy by the news outlets to hide crimes. An origional post of this kind is not responsible communication in a forum like this and becomes part of the "cry wolf" story
Do crimes happen in or near TV ,yes. Do people like to spread sensational rumors, yes. Lets stick to the facts:MOJE_whot:

The Daily Sun is a quick read and anyone who is serious about detailed and in depth news accounts should subscribe to other newspapers.

I tried the link again and it did work. It probably worked before too. I just didn't see the results earlier. The crimes are listed below and not on the map with pushpins.
It is interesting. It looks like there is a bit of domestic violence, some petty theft and DUI's.
When my son went to college in Baltimore every now and then I would look up a crime map in his area on a similar site.
I wonder if the local report is current. Do police need to make public all arrests? I won't bother our police but if some reading this is a retired police officer maybe you would know.
I'll bike into Brownwod and ask there. I'll let you know what I find out.

We buy the Sun and the Orlando Sentinel. We call the former the Good News and the latter the Real News.
