HI Everyone. i have been on the website for a while and i have read lots of emails regarding articles and property being stolen. I posted a question a couple of days ago asking how safe the villages was and only got one reply.I really would like to know if there are any worries i should have. I am living in NJ now and would like to have a place if the villages or the jersey shore and any input would be appreciated, thanks

My personal take is that there is some crime here, but compared to most places it is minimal. There have been a series of breakins and people have lost jewelry and purses, but that seems to be the major crimes. They'll catch one guy doing it and a few months later someone else will start. All in all, I'd guess the crime rate here is much lower.
In reading the arrest reports in the paper, it does seem a lot of drug arrests in neighboring communities. For TV, it is DUIs and spousal abuse.
I feel pretty safe here. I frequently leave my front door open so the cats can enjoy the lanai and have had no problems as yet. I like to walk late in the evening by myself. Have felt no sense of danger. I frequently wander the Squares alone to enjoy the music and people watch. So, I'd rate TV is pretty safe barring some petty thefts.

I believe the villages itself is VERY safe. It is not abnormal for us to leave our home door unlocked when we leave. When we are out golfing and then take our cart to the 19th hole I will put the sunbrella bag cover over the clubs. Not much security , but not much is needed. I have never heard a house alarm go off. I assume almost no one has a home security system. If we venture outside the villages for businesses we will usually lock our car door. We park our car in our driveway and never lock it there. Although the local newspaper may be slanted, about the only crime you see is dui and driving without a license.

Jersey,
I agree with the previous posts.... TV feels very safe and secure to me. Crime-free, of course not, but the crime rate has to be ridiculously low. Remember, this is a veritable good size city, with over 35,000 homes and 70,000 residents. There is virtually no violent crime, mostly minor property theft. Not minor if it happens to you, but, the odds are overwhelmingly against you being a victim of crime here.

Imagine almost anywhere else in the country where one drives a golf cart to a restaurant and leaves it in the street or parking lot with $1000 in golf clubs hanging off the back. A bit careless, of course, but people do this daily and expect to find the cart exactly as they left it. And they do - generally.
It's pretty much like this everywhere in TV. Be sensible and nothing will happen. Be a bit slipshod in taking care of your belongings and probably nothing's going to happen either, but it's possible. TV is certainly safer than most places.
An aside, kinda ~~~ I'm a tad concerned about Brownsville and the surrounding area. I'm worried that it will be something of a magnet for petty or worse crime. Absolutely no basis in fact, but I am concerned.

We are coming from NJ and on our many visits before buying we were very impressed with what appeared to be a very safe and friendly community. Yes there is petty theft I'm sure but that will be whereever you move. The lifestyle in the Villages can't compare to any place else. It is wonderful. We can't wait for our house in NJ to sell so we can stay in our home in TV permanently and enjoy our retirement and no snow or ice anymore. Visit TV more than once if possible and see how great it is

My thoughts exactly.

Jersey:
:agree: with all the foregoing comments. Yes, be careful, but don't be paranoid! I lock my car anywhere except at home, but that's more out habit than anything else! The occasional break-ins are, so far as I've been able to figure out, usually around the edges of TV, areas where nasty guys might climb a fence coming in and then out, with a getaway on an outside road.
Muncle: I think you meant to say Brownwood! I'm inclined to think it'll be a trifle less secure than either Town Square or Market Square, but we sure can't tell yet!

Even local police say that the Villages is far safer than other local areas. Yes, you must keep a keen eye on your neighborhood but don't let it become so important that you can't enjoy your life.
The Villages is a great place to live. :#1:
