View Full Version : Funny smell at the villages

I have a question, not sure this is where to post or not, but here goes: I visited a couple of summers ago and plan to eventually move down, once I'm retired. The one thing I noticed while driving around in the golf cart was a funny odor. It seemed to be every where outside. I asked a few people about it and was given various answers, but no one was really sure. Any ideas? Thanks!

Did it smell "poopy" like fertilizer? They may have fertilized the golf courses and it sure does carry a long way and smell really bad.

There's a garlic plant with with bluish/purplish flowers (at certain times of the year) that is planted in groups along the boulevards. It's a simple plant, but pretty.
My first time at the Villages it almost made me nauseous. But the sense of smell is powerful at triggering memories. Went north . . . came back months later . . . and that stinkin' smell actually brought back fond memories of the Villages. I kinda like it now.
It's supposed to keep bugs away. But I couldn't take the constant smell planting it in my yard.

We were driving home on 466A this afternoon, and it smelled like a garbage dump we used to know and hate on I-96 in Coopersville, MI.

Does it smell like cabbage? I notice that everywhere I go and have been wanting to ask someone what this is.

There are trees that smell...musty, and the water for irrigation that comes from retention ponds south of 466 can smell stinky.

That plant is society garlic. it took me awhile to get used to it. Now it doesn't bother me at all.

I would bet the odor the OP refers to is the irrigation water south of Hwy 466.
It has a sulphur smell and can be likened to boiled eggs.

If it smelled everywhere you went, what was the common denominator?:jester::jester:

Are they using recycled water on the golf courses? That would do it.

My pick is the pond water smell from irrigation

Occasionally I have caught a nasty smell in the air, I thought it might be the odor from the stuff that is used to stain, paint ( whatever) on driveways to seal in the color. It is very strong and wafts through the area for quite some time.

If you were here at a time when the weather was changing with temperatures differing from what had gone before, you might have smelled pond turnover.

It smells like old people.
Jim, you mean a tiny little bit too much Estee Lauder and Old Spice? Not hardly US.....That is the old people when we were young-er.
There IS the smell of sweaty old people who have just finished pickleball, bicycling, jogging, line dancing, exercise class, and tennis.
Then there is the odor of sanctity. And the sweet smell of happiness. I'd think more happiness than sanctity...but hey, we are still very much alive.
To be honest, I HAVE noticed a lot of old-er people around here. Personally, I like the way they smile, never noticed they smelled.

OP, the smell could be any of the "things" others have posted. At times the irrigation water does have a terrible odor and that is because TV uses a lot of reclaimed water for obvious environment reasons. This water keeps everything alive and green.

Thanks for all your help! It was more toxic than the natural bad smells you're suggesting. We were there at the end of June-beginning of July, if that helps at all. Just wondering how "healthy" it could be breathing in that smell.

Cyndy, it might BE the garbage dump on 466a.
From Walgreens at colony, I can hear the dumpsters being emptied behind the berm that is south of 466 AA.
Your comment made me snicker.

I have not seen any mention of the chemical smell that was around about a year ago when they were recoating the roads. They sprayed something onto a lot of roads mostly north of 466. This went on for weeks and when they did this the smell was everywhere . Almost like a paint solvent.

The dump on 466a is for construction material only. There are no garbage landfills anywhere near here.

I don't think even the Moderator minds when a little humor is splashed into a serious thread.
It probably gives him a laugh to an otherwise boring (?) day.
BTW, I'm not telling you Mr. Bonanza's avatar name!
As it stands right now, I'm already dead meat!!!
