Why do pros hitting balls at the range with a pile of balls at their feet, wait for their caddy to throw them a ball??? Is it coooool?????

I can't answer that, but I guess it's better than the old way when the caddie used to stand down range dodging golf balls with a shag bag in his hands.

I suspect it is just when using a tee? Say for a driver?

My thought is it saves a bend over. Caddy throws ball, you bend over and tee it up. You only have so many bend overs in life :).

I also suspect when hitting 'woods' they take special care to be sure there is no sand on the ball, so maybe the caddy cleans them up?

My best guess. Because they can!

When the balls lie in a pile on the ground sand or soil often adheres to them. The caddie will pick up the balls and wipe each one before tossing it to the player.
