View Full Version : Mischief at the mailboxes

I realize that we are all here to enjoy ourselves and some perhaps to relive our youth. But seriously, it's pretty immature; sadly immature; to mess with a "neighbor's" mailbox!
We put a sticker for a family owned restaurant we enjoy in NC on our mailbox to help us locate it quickly.
Some idiot tore it off! All the others around ours have stickers, they all seem to be intact. Our was not off color, political or in any way offensive. So what's the deal? Just some jerk showing his true colors?
I'm sure the intent was to pi$$ someone off. And they were successful. It's just so juvenile that I certainly didn't see that coming in America's Friendliest Hometown.
What happened to respecting the rights of others??

I would never remove anyone's sticker but I have to admit I think they junk up our mail stations. No one should remove your sticker but it's really not that hard to find your mail box. Sorry someone took your sticker. I guess they think they are the mail box police.

oh no!! maybe it was a lawyer or ex-postal employee going postal !!
It is against the law to" willfully deface", damage or destroy a mailbox. Doing so could incur a fine and/or a 3-year prison sentence

We have lived in Polo Ridge for only 5 months and had our various stickers removed every time. Neighboring boxes have also had their stickers removed. The only ones that this guy/gal doesn't remove are US Flags.
It has really bothered me. I have no idea why anyone would be doing this, or even care.

Not being judgmental, just curious. Your box has a number; why do you need a sticker?

If you go to the US post office and have a box there, would you put a sticker on it? Have you ever seen stickers on boxes at a US Post Office?

Our mailstop was stripped of stickers and writing after it started to look like graffiti and included writing with magic markers. Most folks have not objected to the clean look and have found it not too difficult to remember 4 numbers or 2nd row 5th box from the end, etc. Been told we don't own the box so it is not appropriate to deface someone else's property.

What if someone decides it isn't necessary to paint your driveway or add personality to your name on your lamp post? Just because you don't care to have a sticker on your mailbox doesn't or shouldn't mean someone else can't.

Dotti go to the $ store and buy a lot of bright colored stickers. Every time someone removes your sticker replace it with another one.
Better yet spray paint a small pink dot on your box that can't be peeled off. I'd like to see that on video, surprise, it doesn't come off that easy.

It could be it was removed by a postal employee because it would be considered an advertisement for a restaurant rather than just a sticker and advertising on government property is very much against the law. Other possibilities: someone was going to be driving through that area and wanted to remember the name of the restaurant or was from there and wanted the memory or it was cute and a child removed it. I would bet on the postal employee, though.

Actually, Postal Workers don't see your sticker. They are on the other side of box. Wish people would leave well alone. (not harming anyone, or anything) Instead, lets greet our neighbors when we are at the mailboxes. Let's act like a "smiley sticker"

Possibly because some mailboxes are located on the bottom couple of rows, and can be difficult to identify by number.

I visit numerous postal stations to collect mail for clients. I'm sorry, but I find the postal stations with stickers all over them, look trashy, like graffiti.
There are a few postal stations I visit that have no stickers whatsoever. I don't see anyone at those stations trying their key in several boxes before they find their own. I would never remove someone's stickers, but as I said, in my opinion, its defacing a piece of property that is not your own.
Just my opinion, but then again, I'm a neat-nick.
With all that said, I agree with Gracie, your sticker was most likely seen as an advertisement, and that is why it was removed. If one advertisement goes on a mailbox, then who's to say everyone who has a small business wouldn't start advertising at the postal stations. As someone said, try a butterfly.

I do wish I had a stack of the stickers so I could simply replace it again and again.
I don't think it was deemed "advertising" it is for a BBQ place in NC called 12 Bones. The sticker is simply a large number 12 with the word "bones" under that.
We have close family ties there. Seeing the "12 Bones" sticker just made us smile. Simple as that.
Just surprised at the juvenile behavior by a "friendly neighbor". I guess it's amazing what people will do when no one is watching!! (it wasn't a postal worker, I asked before we put the sticker up. And it wasn't a kid. The mailbox is above my head!)
Hmmm, President Obama did eat there once. Does that make it a target for a political zealot? Who knows??

I'm sure the wide variety of new stickers, old stickers, partially torn stickers, faded stickers, dirty left-over adhesive residue from stickers removed, etc, etc, make the mail boxes really, really attractive.
I see little difference between this and cigarette butts & other litter on the ground, yet I'm surprised at how many folks that seem to think defacing property that isn't theirs with silly stickers is just 100% ok. Others do it, so why can't I? Following that line of reasoning let's all just trash the grounds, too.
Can't wait to move there so I can help beautify TV by peeling a few stickers.:boom:

Perhaps when you move to TV you'll feel differently.
At our Mail Station, I haven't seen any of the stickers you describe
There are some stickers but they seem to be "well maintained".
Perhaps this appears to be a bigger issue than it really is.

I hope you're right, but I know we saw a postal station that looked more than a tad littered with stickers when we were on our LV in Dec 2012. Have no recollection where it was since we were all over TV trying to take it all in. I just remember thinking at the time that yes, now I see what some have complained about on TOTV.

There is zero. zilch, none, nada at our mail box station nor were there any in Hadley before we moved to this village.
I can think of so many things I consider larger issues than this but someone will say I am minimizing. In our house if something goes a little wrong , we look at each other and say, It's not cancer and continue on.
I very much doubt it is political. I am willing to bet most people have never heard of the restaurant no matter who ate there.

That's right. Dyslexia, near blindness, snowbird forgetfulness, a box that's very low (mine, but the one above it has a sticker on it--thanks, nitehawk!). There are a number of reasons someone might need to legitimately make their mailbox easier to spot.

If someone does not like stickers on their mailbox then do not put one on. There are stickers all over the duval mailboxes and I could care less. It is a mailbox you get your mail and leave. For those of you that need help remembering your mailbox number, why not make a sticker and put in on your own personal mailbox key rather than the mailbox door. If it is something that makes you smile you will see it every day...and it won't bother anyone else. I, too, thinks it looks like graffiti and is tacky. Do you put stickers on your house to help you find it too?

I think Sunny's point was that a visit to the mailboxes takes a minute or two.

If it helps Wrinklies quickly find their postal boxes, it seems of little impact to other residents.

OK, count me in as one of those horrible people that stickerized my box. With something very neutral and P.O. related. Heaven help me if I plugged on a Cubs or Patriots sticker...
Personally I think it's a cute idea and does not promote lawlessness or graffiti or anything else the naysayers throw.
C'mon - get a life and enjoy your days here. Let the folks have fun. One of my (very few) negatives about TV is the yada regarding exterior home fronts. We all tend to blend into each other esp with the color choices given. Thankfully we have some choices to customize our landscaping and such - within ARC of course. So some of us want a bit of fun and personalization of the mailslot fronts. As long as they are not offensive to a group - SO WHAT? Yes yes - we don't own them. c'mon - loosen up and groove a bit. And if you 'choose not to abuse' - leave yours vanilla.
For those that take it upon themselves whether in spite or boredom or 'holier than thou' to rip them off - please wait till I'm there so we can have a discussion about this topic. I know I wouldn't change your mind, but at least we could exchange views.

Basically, no matter how many threads we have, there will probably never be agreement on a lot of Villages issues.
On one side we have the "rules are rules" folks who feel that all should be neat and tidy, that people must adhere to deed restrictions with no deviations for personal circumstances, and that any failure to follow rules will open the door to more and more infractions, and will negatively affect our wonderful, pristine surroundings.
And then there are the "don't sweat the small stuff" folks who feel that we should lighten up, be more relaxed, live and let live, we are here to have fun, if it doesn't hurt anyone, then MYOB, and understand the reasons if someone doesn't rigidly follow each rule.
And in the middle we have people like me who tend to boomerang according to the issue at hand. I probably lean toward the relaxed group, yet none of us want our beautiful paradise to deteriorate.

I just realized that I have spent more time reading this thread than I have spent at the mail boxes since I moved here last October. Having invested that much energy, it seems wasteful not to take a stand, and here it is:
1. I have no issues with those who put stickers on mail boxes.

3. I have no issues with those who do neither.

To the person on another thread who wondered about the humidity and how people in The Villages cope with it, as do I wonder, this must be the answer--stay inside and debate harmless subjects on TOTV! If we buy, I will have to give much thought to the sticker/don't sticker issue.:jester:

Heaven help me if I plugged on a Cubs or Patriots sticker...
I doubt if heaven would be inclined to help you if you put those stickers anywhere! Some things can't be forgiven.

OK, count me in as one of those horrible people that stickerized my box. With something very neutral and P.O. related. Heaven help me if I plugged on a Cubs or Patriots sticker...
Heaven sent this..... Take your choice
