Remove a closet in second bedroom

I realize some of you may think we're crazy because we'd like to have a closet removed to gain that extra 2 plus feet but we'd like the extra room vs. the closet space. (It was supposed to be a den anyway.)

I'd like to know if I should contact a drywall specialist or someone else. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is it a Supporting wall? Makes a big difference in what can or cannot be done. Do you intend to do it yourself? Here is the phone number of a man here that does this kind of work.

Nope, not a supporting wall and I don't intend on doing it myself.

Just be aware that if/when your house is sold, it will have to be listed as a 1 bedroom. In order to be considered a bedroom, the room must have a closet. While you may not care, future prospective purchasers may and could negatively impact your exposure. You may consider removing the closet in a manner that it would be easy to re-construct one down the road.

Thanks very much for your input. I didn't make myself clear - this is a 3-bedroom home and I want to remove the closet from just one, leaving two others with closets.

sgiamp1 - that is a much better situation. people will embrace a 2 bredroom/den more than a 1 bedroom/den. Good luck!

I just removed my closet door, stuck it in the attic, put a valance curtain up to hide the shelf and stuck my computer desk in there. I have the room, no closet but extra space for the computer. Win, win.
