Generator

We bought a generator years ago and never had need for it.

Is this something we should move to TV? Is there a need for it? How often and how long are the power outages? I feel we should sell it, hubby wants to take it!

All the utilities are underground, they are for the most part all the latest technology hence outages don't happen very often unless associated with a major local event like a tornado or head on hit by hurricanes.

If I owned one I would have brought it with me. Have it wired in by an expert on an outside, weather protected pad.

We moved to TV over 6 years ago and w have never had a power outage lasting more than a few seconds... even during the hurricanes 3 or 4 years ago.

With all the things i don't need at TV (generator, mower, snow blower yada, yada, yada) I'm starting to think i may just move down with the clothes on our back and some old pictures that would fit in one or two boxes.

I'm glad someone asked the generator question. I was thinking that we'd need one of those NG powered generators which kicks in automatically when you lose power but if you're telling me that significant outages are rare then we can save ourselves the cash outlay. What about smaller portable generators? Has anyone ever used or felt the need for one since you've lived in TV?

We have a generator in upstate New York that I have to remind myself to turn on periodically just to 'exercise' it and give the gas a chance to cycle through it. And there our electricity is subject to everything from auto accidents to lightning strikes, in contrast to here where all utilities are underground and everything is comparatively new. Personally I can't see dragging a generator down here, but if you already own it, I guess it can't hurt. Don't forget, as mentioned by another poster, that it has to be properly wired into the house circuitry (unless you just want it to plug an extension cord into).
