Repairing Broken Garage Door Spring

Came home Fri night to find garage door would not budge in attempting to open. Discovered the next morning the left spring had broken. Did a search on TOTV for a good repairman and tried Ryan Cull who had some good references. Remember now, this is Memorial Day weekend. Called Sat evening at 6 pm. and left message with Ryan. Long story short Ryan returns call this am and door is repaired within an hour or so. Very professionally done I might add. Thanks TOTV and to Ryan Cull Garage Doors Inc.

Actually, this is Labor Day weekend. But it sounds like Ryan is a good guy to call when having a garage door problem.

My garage door spring broke last year. Called Romac and they said they would only fix it if I had both strings replaced. I believe the cost was going to be around $300 for parts and labor.
I looked on the Internet and found numerous DIY videos on how to replace and preload the torsion springs. If I recall, my total cost cost was around $35-$50 to do one spring. Caution: It's not a job for a non-handy guy.

Please remember to place a safety cable through each overhead door spring and secure it with bolts to the frame. When garage door springs are under pressure and they snap they can jettison loose and seriously injury you, or anything in the garage. Most states require them to be installed. You can purschase these cables at most home repair stores.

There are two types of garage door springs... torsion springs and extension springs. Torsion springs are installed above the garage door header. Extension springs are the more visible ones that run parallel to door rails.
Safety cables are required and necessary on extension spring doors as VolGuy stated.
Tension spring type doors do not need a safety cable installed. When they break, they are held in place by the rod that goes through the spring.

For clarification, it's Ryan O'Cull.

Depending on the age if the home it may be covered by a warranty. Call home warranty to see who originally installed it to ask before paying. Ours was covered and home was four years old by Romac.

Have to add my enthusiastic AMEN to using Ryan O'Cull, Garage Doors, Inc. Our left spring broke Saturday night and I figured no one would help till at least Tuesday. I called Ryan Sunday evening after reading many comments in TOTV forums. If it was an emergency, he would have come over right then at 7:30pm. I said it wasn't that much of an emergency - we were fine for the night. He volunteered that he could be at our house at 9:30am Monday (Labor Day). Wow! Figured he might make it some time Monday but no he was here at 9:31am. Within 30 minutes both springs were changed (I wanted both changed just to have them the same age/strength) and he was driving away. If you have a problem with your door, call Ryan! I would also recommend Ryan O'Cull. I called him at 5pm today after a garage door spring broke at my home. I explained that it wasn't an emergency but he offered to come out and was at my home within the hour. He replaced both springs for a very reasonable price and fixed another issue with one of my door hinges at no additional cost.

I believe garage door springs are good for about 7 years of use before they break and you can't use the garage door until they are replaced.

It isn't a good idea to go under a garage door while it is moving - maybe the spring will break and ruin your day.

Maybe Romac wants to install two for liability reasons.

You should keep springs and hinges lubricated yearly, it will extend the life of the spring.

Keeping the garage door springs lubricated is important because when the spring winds and unwinds it rubs against itself, causing it to wear and eventually break. The metal also rusts in this humid environment. The oil helps keep it moving freely, and slows the rust.
