Does anyone know why the Leesburg Airport was recently renamed Leesburg International Airport? Are they going to get a major carrier soon? Sure beats traveling to Orlando.

I understand US Customs is available there, maybe on a call up basis for General Aviation flights. Small aircraft can fly in from Bahamas, etc. and be met by customs on prior request. Therefore it is listed as an international airport. Can't see airline service in the near future as runways I believe are too short for large commercial aircraft other than commuters.

Few in and out of Sanford Airport a few times which is about 30 miles closer to RV than Orlando.

I heard a rumor that the Villages developers' family requested a name change so that they could fly to Leesburg International Airport to avoid the Customs at Orlando. Have no idea if this is true or not. They do have a lot of political clout around this area of Florida???

Now, you say it's a rumor, yet still type what you don't know to be true? Let's not go and say the family/developer requested something to make their lives easier using political clout if unsubstantiated.

Maybe it has something to do with all of the International Polo Teams and Players who participate in matches at TV Polo Grounds.

Don't know about the name change, but I remember an article in the paper, not the Sun, about a customs office being set up in Leesburg, so that the Village traffic would not have to stop in Orlando before landing in Leesburg. Not sure how that came about but would make one wonder

Really nothing to wonder about. Flew for a major corporation that arranged US Customs at a local airport to eliminate costly stops at major facilities where landing fees were outrageous (yes general aviation pays high fees to land at major airports-contrary to what the airlines say). The cost was to pay for travel expense (mileage) from the nearest international airport. Far less than landing and handling fees at major international airports. :) :)

Well that's why I called it a "rumor". Here is the definition of a rumor from Wikipedia--

"an unverified account or explanation of events circulating from person to person and pertaining to an object, event, or issue in public concern".

I know the definition of a rumor, what I am questioning is the repeating of it! The developer/family gets bashed for enough things that ARE fact, let alone spreading things unsubstantiated. You talk about victims as a big cause of yours, well, people are victims when rumors that aren't proven are spread about them also.

Well, then why do you think this airport is suddenly called "Leesburg International Airport" if it is not to accommodate the needs of the Villages? http://www.leesburgflorida.gov/airport/index.aspx

Which carriers fly into this airport??? http://www.orlandoedc.com/Data%20Center/Transportation/airports.shtml

Forget it, man, you want to deflect my point of contention, fine, continue to spread your rumors. That's your right to do that, I guess, but it's also my right to speak up when I think it's unjust. YOU, of all people, by many of your posts, should know what I mean!! Now, if you don't want anyone ever disagreeing with anything you say, or how you say it, than don't post something. I myself, don't like rumors, much harm can be done by them. That's my point.

What's that supposed to mean?

I was merely answering the question posted at the beginning of this thread by Grumpy. I qualified my answer with this being a "rumor". Something I heard someone else say about this airport.

Why an airport is called "international" would also seem to be a matter of public concern.

Ok, fine, I said my piece, that I disagree. No worries. Have a great day!

Not sure how much space there is for the Leesburg International Airport to expand. There's all those lakes around that area. http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?w=1&T=1&Lat=28.823083&Lon=-81.808722

Hey Tal, if you look at some of the runways in the world, those lakes look like small potatoes.
The airport could also be in Ocala, or between here and Ocala.
I think our Developer is to be admired. He makes things happen for us. I hope this will be one of them. I want an airport!!!!!

Maybe, we could borrow John Travolta's? :joke:

Travolta's is a private strip that can handle a B-707 (his private aircraft painted like Quantas). That's where a BMW was run off the end at high speed killing its youthful occupants (sudden impact with a tree). Runway is longer than Leesburg which as Tal noted is 5000 feet. Need at least 7000 feet preferably 8000 feet for the larger equipment.
