Sedation Dentist

I moved here a few months ago. I am having trouble finding a dentist that does IV sedation. My back teeth can not be numbed when I need work done. I have to be knocked out when they do work on that part of my mouth. Has anyone had any experience with a dentist that sedates in our area. I am not talking about an oral surgeon, but a dentist that is qualified in IV sedation? I would rather go with a recommendation than a simple google search. Thanks!

I am a RDH and 40 yrs ago I worked in a large dental facility which provided that type of service. There was an anesthesiologist as well as a RNA on staff, however, to my knowledge that is not available today. Anesthesia is very dangerous and should only be used when necessary and by an anesthesiologist. Dentists do not qualify.

I also must say that I have never seen or heard of local anesthesia "not working"...today the needles are thinner and they numb the tissue first.

Perhaps you should look for another dentist. I also worked for a oral surgery practice for 3 yrs. They use a combination of sedation and local, and do not intubate.


Today with malpractice lawsuits you need preop tests, ekg, and disclosure of side effects and signing many forms....makes one feel like you are going to "die on the table" and that may very well happen.

So, my advice to you would be to find a good dentist and have it done with local. And also, the quality of the work will be better. JMO

That is dangerous and outdated. I am sure you are just anxious....many people have had bad experiences as children. Just tell your dentist your concerns and he/she will make you feel comfortable. And don't go to Gentle Dental or the other one that begins with A. ??

My husband, daughter and me....we all go to Palm Ridge Dental.

I don't KNOW if they use Nitrous Oxide. (Inhaled laughing gas)

Kathleen Williams and Reem Jabar, both women trained at University of Florida Dental School and in my opinion are the best dentists I have ever known in my lifetime.

I too get all nervous and scared because of childhood experience, but not once have I had any discomfort and they are both gentle, caring and comforting as well as really well educated. I THINK Dr. Jabar MAY have some openings for new patients, but you may have to wait for your first appointment.

There are some CRUMMY dentists in The Villages, but Drs. Williams and Jabar are excellent and ethical and gentle too.

Dear Slip, Nitrous is not outdated and is dangerous if patient is left alone in the procedure room. Nitrous is to be mixed with Oxygen when given, monitoring by staff, and when the dentist is finished working, the nitrous is turned off and 100% oxygen is given. I have been receiving Nitrous in NY for the past 20 years. Just an FYI, Nitrous is used by anesthesiologists in the OR. I am knowledgeable about anesthesia as I have been a PACU/Recovery Room RN for over 20 years.

I do want to say that if you had an abscess tooth, local would not take and should not be given...antibiotics for a few days. This was not necessarily done when you were a child....obviously, a very bad experience.

Thank you, you are correct, but in a dental office is different...the dentist is knowledgeable but his staff would not have your training...monitoring blood pressure...also, dental offices may not have equipment if something goes wrong. Also his insurance cost would be high. In a hospital it is quite different. To be honest, I saw an elderly man die in the chair because of equipment...things happen. The bottom line, local is best...unless in hospital.

I just want to share another story....I had a colonoscopy done 3 year ago and had a polip removed..had another done last April and the same polip grew back. I then had to go into the hospital for deeper surgery. Anyway, after the surgery, the anesthesiologist told me I had a very difficult intubation, had to use a fiber optic tube. Advised me to wear a life alert bracelet. WHO KNEW, things happen...Like Joan Rivers I never had surgery so I didn't know I had a rare throat.

I've got to agree that Dr. Reem Jabar who is my dentist in that office is top notch. Although a very busy office I was impressed when calling a while ago because of a toothache. The receptionest told me she would get me in asap and wouldn't think of letting me suffer any longer than necessary.

Dr Heydari pulled my tooth a month ago with two shots that took effect almost instantly. I was nervous but had hardly any pain.
