View Full Version : wii? we? oui?

Mr. Boomer and I were talking about buying a wii, but, in truth, we have no idea what we are talking about.
A discussion started on here somewhere awhile back. And yesterday when I was squinting at the "Daily Sun" recreation section online, I saw that somebody wants to start a club. So I thought maybe I could find some answers to my wii questions here on TOTV.
So here goes:
Can we count playing with a wii as exercise of any significant amount? - or hey, even semi-significant would be better than what we have been doing all winter.
And, does this thing hold any promise of helping to improve hand-eye coordination? (mine -Mr. B is coordinated.)
-or could we at least hope to collapse into a heap of laughter while trying to play?
So if anybody out there can help us with our decision on whether or not to buy a wii, we would truly appreciate the advice.
Thanks.

Two thoughts from an experienced Wii parent:
My 20 year old works up a real sweat AND he is no better at Wii golf or bowling than in real life so yes hand/eye coordination will be developed.

I have played the Wii bowling and it is lots of fun (good laughs but it can get competitive). One basically moves the same way you would if you were really bowling, just not as strenously and you mash a button instead of release a heavy ball. You definitely can work up a sweat though.
The young folks in my office sometimes play the different games during lunch hour in the conference room and have a blast.
It's fun to do with groups of folks or just alone (practice when no one is watching, lol).

I am still trying out how to respond to these posts. ???
My husband and I purchased a WII over a year ago. It is guaranteed to give you a great deal of laughs. We often do bowling for dollars with beer rounds. It can get quite physical if you try the boxing or tennis. There are some Olympic games that will give you a real workout.
We play with our adult friends and also with our grandchildren. It is definitely worth the price.
I think you would enjoy it. As long as you make sure you keep the controller attached to your wrist and you don't throw it through your 60" Plasma TV.

Okay, I can see that my response has shown up on the site. My apologies for leaving a blank post.
Wanted to add that they also have games like "Big Brain Academy", Brain Age 1 and Brain Age 2 as well as Focus Factor. All are recommended to keep your brains sharp and help your eye hand coordination. They can be played alone or with groups. You will find a vast number of different types of games at the local stores.

Thank you to all. We are going to try to find one tomorrow.
DickY,
I checked the link. That looks like fun. Maybe an old baby boomer can make a comeback as a surfer girl.
Russ and VK,
You both used the word "sweat" in your posts. That's one of the words I was looking for.
And barbjim,
Boy do I know how you feel about trying to master those quotes for addressing posts. I still mess it up. The other day, I was writing a long and well thought out and, of course, totally brilliant piece of advice (Right. ;)) to someone and I had tried to just quote the part of her post that I was addressing. That infernal little "quote" mark at the bottom hid from me. I ended up writing the whole thing in the quote font. The more I fished for the "quote" mark to try to remove it, the worse it got. Finally, I just deleted the whole thing and went on with my life.
Your wii advice was quite an inspiration though. Now if I can just "sweat" enough to make up for the beer rounds.

I have a wii and really enjoy it - I do get exercise when I play the sports especially the boxing. I get downright aggressive trying to knock the guy out! I bought a Tiger Woods golf game on eBay which is real nice. I would like to get Tomb Raider also - I had that on Playstation. I just bought an extra controller so now I can play with 2 people. I highly recommend it! Have Fun!

Good Morning Muncle,
I did not see this last night but when I discovered it this morning it started my day with a laugh. Thank you.
I just looked back at the original Nintendo wii fit ad and saw that it is exactly the same, sans voice-over. It just goes to show that a thousand words are worth far more than a picture.
For some reason, when I looked at the original wii fit thing yesterday, Beach Boys songs began to play in my head. I saw surfing. Not that this Ohio girl has ever surfed.
My imagination gets away from me sometimes.
But spring is here I think so I can get a little sunshine in my life. Of course, this morning's sign of spring was not a pleasant one. A poor bird who wanted to box slammed into the window and woke me up. Alas, he would have been so much better off with a wii.
The plan is to stick to the wii that has the golfing and bowling and boxing - oh my! We will probably only succeed in scaring our geriatric dog while we try to play.
So we will go to the store, and maybe even stop at IKEA on the way back. (I have also been wondering what that place is all about. But hey, I hear they have food.) And after such an exciting day, maybe we can go "wii, we, oui!" all the way home.
(I think I have managed to digress quite enough for one morning and now I will step away from the computer. Really. Really. I will.)
Oh, and thanks again for the heads up, Muncle.

Just a few minutes ago Diane Sawyer, fellow front-end baby boomer, was talking about the wii fit on Good Morning America. They have not shown the full segment yet. It will be this half hour probably so by the time you see this, it will be gone. -- but will probably be on the web site later.
So I thought, for the occasion and bc there has been other wii discussion here recently, I would bump this thread.
Actually the wii fit looks pretty lame from what I have seen so far. But I think that Diane and company are supposed to convince us otherwise.
If you are interested in the wii fit, be sure not to miss Muncle's link here in this thread to a You Tube parody of the commercial for it. The link is rolling-on-the-floor funny.
btw We never did get our wii -- the original kind.I got busy and forgot all about it until just now. But maybe soon.

This is an update on a thread that I started here long ago. Actually last March. But hey, guess what! I finally bought a wii. I would never stand in line for one. But last night we wandered into Best Buy and they actually had some for sale. No lines. So I bought one.
This probably means that I am hopelessly passe because everybody else has some newer generation one of these things or something. But oh well, I am hanging around the mailbox waiting for the pet rock and mood ring I just ordered to arrive.
I just wondered how everybody is doing with the wii. I keep pretending there is hope that it could help me hit a real golf ball that goes somewhere, once in awhile.
So anyway, anything new with the world of wii?

Boomer and other Wii lovers!
I LOVE the Wii....and I am not a sports person at all! HOWEVER....I am a Pro at Tennis, Golf, Bowling and Baseball!!! I can't believe it....actually in Tennis....my score is so high (2300+) that I now have to play as a new Mii....so I have some challenge!
Ofcourse put in the real thing and I stink!! It actually got me to be really active again! Since we got it ( xmas 07) I have lost 40 pds!!! Not really because of the Wii but because it got me moving again!!!
But as a family activity it so much fun! We have also hosted Wii parties....and that is GREAT fun...getting to make Mii's for our friends coming to dinner ( :1rotfl: )and then playing with them!
I would LOVE to try Wii fit....I think I would really get into it! It is hard playing in the Villa though....our home in NY had VERY high ceilings! Here they are not as high and I think we are going to hit the ceiling fan one too many times! :1rotfl: :duck:
Anyone that has a Wiifit and wants to sell...I will buy....otherwise I have to convince the family that it is good for all of us!! :MOJE_whot:

Hi Barefoot,
I have the wii Sports version. The wii Fit was out of stock. The opening date on this thread was 6 months ago, almost exactly. The supply of these things has been purposely limited by Nintendo I am sure. I am so sure they could have cranked them out faster. People around here stood in line for them. Not me. But I figured sooner or later one would fall into my lap and that's what happened last night.
Cassie's answer on the cost is where mine was. $250 ($249.99) but it only comes with one remote. We bought a second one for $40. The games are included: Golf, tennis, baseball, bowling, and boxing.
And. . .
I am so glad to read here how everybody likes these so much. Maybe there is hope for me to become coordinated even though I am now in my dotage. (I was always that girl who could not get picked for those gym class teams. Even my best friend would not pick me. -- and to this day, I will not let her live it down. Just because I ducked every time a ball came anywhere near me. Even MY BEST FRIEND would not pick me. There I stood. On that stupid line in that gym. Wearing my baggy gym suit and my cateye glasses. MY BEST FRIEND! WOULD NOT PICK ME! -- Whew! It seems that I am still not over it.)
So anyway, I am going to give this thing a try. For some reason after the news this week, I feel like starting with boxing. I think you get to punch people and knock them down. Maybe Nintendo should market those virtual opponents with a choice of faces.
And JoannP, I just have to say that not only do I really like that avatar, but that little saying at the bottom of your screen is so wonderful and so true.

Well Boomer, you've really struck a nerve with that comment. I was that girl that was the LAST ONE always picked, no co-ordination whatsoever. :22yikes: In frustration I organized all the other losers and started a cheerleading squad which was even more pathetic because we were all so uncoordinated!
Anyway, back to Wii. I'm wondering, do you think it is like treadmills? You buy them in a fit of enthusiasm and after a few months they end up in the basement (or in the case of TV, in a garage sale)?
Boomer
09-23-2008, 09:28 PM
Barefoot,
I can relate to the fitness center in the dark basement corner. I have found though that some pieces of exercise equipment can serve as excellent places to hang clothes. But from what I have seen and heard about the wii, it can make you laugh. And I have never laughed while on a treadmill.
Well, come to think of it there was that one time that I laughed while on a treadmill. For some reason, a few years back, the doc decided I should have a stress test. So OK. I did. And I was on that treadmill, going faster and faster, and asking the nurse who was standing there about a million questions. I asked her about when we would be finished, and about how fast it could go, and about how she liked her job, and about how I was doing . . .and about oh, whatever. And that nurse finally said to me, "You know, Boomer, I think you are probably doing just fine because you have not shut up yet."
And so I laughed then, while on a treadmill, just that one time though. (And that is a true story, just like all my other stories.)
The one time I tried a wii, it was just for a few minutes and everybody else was laughing. I truly am unbelievably uncoordinated. There is a post in all this stuff I have written that is about how I am completely traumatized by majorettes. How in the world can anyone manage to twirl a baton without knocking themselves senseless. And then there is that whole fire twirling thing! My hair or someone ese's would be in flames so fast.
Hey, maybe when you get back to TV, you could start another club like that cheerleader thing you did in school. Maybe an uncoordinated twirlers' group to march in parades. I bet we could draw a crowd.

If you get a Wii fit you will find it to be a very useful tool to help one establish a goal to reduce your BFI (body fat index) as well as weight loss.
Just becoming aware of your center of balance and the different games that Wii fit presents...all help to improve your balance as well as being a guide to BFI and weight reduction. Typically the Wii for $249.00 comes with the sports games...tennis, bowling etc.....these really are the bet games to get started with.....
It does become addictive though! I found myself on the Wii all the time. It was hysterical.
I absolutely want the Wii Fit....I think I could do each day to start out the day before work stuff!
I will tell you that since I started playing the Wii and becoming more active over all...I really have lost a lot of weight. I know it is not just because of the Wii...but it did get me started and still helps.
I went shopping to day and can officially wear 4 sizes smaller than what I was wearing in January when we started our Wii playing~!!
I realized I needed new clothes the other day....when I was dancing at the square and my Capri pants almost fell right off!!!
SO....I need to keep going and I need Wii Fit....if anyone sees one out there please post it here ASAP!!! or pm me

Great recommendation BTK, we'll be getting one for sure! :coolsmiley:
My only concern was that it might turn out like my treadmills. Yes, plural, I actually have two, one at the cottage and one at home.
