I had a discussion with the Publix Pharmacist at Colony and
she told me:
It takes 3-4 weeks to become effective,
It is not too early to get the flu shot,
The shot lasts almost a year.
So I got my flu shot today!

I happened to be at my internist's office last week and she shuffled me right off for a shot (in their own lab, of course). I usually get one since I'm in a high risk category but thought it was a little early, too.

I got mine last Thursday as I was at the doctors office anyway. I'm good to go.
Better to get it early rather than wait and then you have to wait even more, if they have run out.

Most pharmacies can give you the shot.
My husband and I got ours at Sam's when we were there doing some shopping.
We went to the pharmacy first, filled out the form, did our shopping and then went back for the shot.
There's no reason for anyone to wait and/or to make an appointment to get this shot.
