Next on the bucket list .. Venice Italy . We will be going October 2015. Looking for a centrally located hotel, not a budget but not five star either. I have been researching most of the main travel sites but would love to hear your experiences. Don't forget to add the negatives so I can avoid the same. Thanks again.

We stayed at Savola Jolanda, a bit pricey but worth it for a special treat. Right on the water next to St Pete's Square. Do not eat their but explore restaurants on back street.

We went to Italy 2 years ago. The best money I ever spent was on the Rick Steves book. Buy the latest volume. He lists hotels he knows very well.

This is where we stayed in Venice. We were very happy.

We have stayed at the Palazzo Sant Angelo on two of our trips to Venice. It is right on the Grand Canal so if you are taking a train into Venice you can get off and get on a water taxi and it will take you right to their door. A lot of people who have never been there don't realize that if you do not stay right along the canal you have to drag your luggage through the streets and up and down the little bridges throughout the city. The rooms are quite nice and the bathrooms are all marble and spotless. They offer a nice breakfast as part of your stay. In any case have a wonderful time in a terrific city.

We stayed at the Hotel Metropole on the Grand Canal....a little pricey but historic...has been about 6 years so it might be different but we stayed there 7 days and they were superb.

another hotel right on the canal is Hotel Principe which i liked very much ...about a twenty minute walk to st mark's, very pleasant....old fashioned furniture...we were on a tour so don't know prices but i doubt if it is expensive :)

We too stayed at one of the palazzos on the Grand Canal (Palazzo Pisani… booked thru airbnb dot com). We were upgraded to a gorgeous 3-room suite overlooking the canal (handy with the kids). Whimsey's advice is spot on about staying at a place on one of the canals and avoiding schlepping your luggage over the cobblestone.

If I may add another small piece of advice… since you only live once… a very special way to be introduced to the beauty of Venice is via personal water taxi from the airport to your hotel (out the airport, turn left and a few hundred yards down is the water taxi stand on the left.) Prices are fixed and posted. We chose the longer and slower ride down the Grand Canal… It was fantastic! Airport to your front door and a beautiful personal tour of the GC.

yes i agree that the wow factor of arriving at our hotel in the water taxi was one of the highlights of the city....had never arrived that way on previous visits!
