I thought about this the other day when an unmarked van came down our street and a man jumped out and delivered yet another telephone book to everyone's door. I looked at book and saw it wasn't from EMBARQ, but it indicated it was an Ocala "Talking Book" :dontknow:. Since we already had received a 2008 Marion County/Ocala book from EMBARQ, I put it back into the clear plastic bag and placed it into my Official Villages Clear Plastic 13 gallon recycling bag. :barf:
I figured that since we had 5 EMBARQ books in the house that had been delivered and I no longer used telephone books since I learned that I can access AT&T's Online Directories for free I didn't need another one, even if it was a "Talking Book"..
I spoke to District Manager Janet Tutt about this recently and the burden it places on recycling efforts and she said Villages is powerless to do anything about the more than 100,000 telephone books delivered annually to Villages Residents. There was a time before Sprint became EMBARQ when they had a collection box at The Hacienda Rec Center parking lot for old telephone books. Long gone from the scene!
I assume that there is money being made by telcos for business listings and advertising in telephone books or else, they wouldn't be spreading them all over the Country at no charge and like many other corporations, EMBARQ does not want to be responsible for the problems they create.
Rather than fill up our recycling bags or leave the books at Mail Stops as is still being done by some clueless individuals, throughout TV, I think we should leave them at EMBARQ's front door. Let them see how many 13 gallon clear plastic recycling bags it takes annually to dispose of their books.
Coincidentally as I am writing this, I received a telephone call and the person calling wanted to know if my Talking Telephone Book was delivered and was it in good condition. I informed her that since I didn't ask for it, and did not want it, it had already gone to the recycling center without being opened. She seemed surprised and when I asked her to stop future delivery, she seemed willing to take me off of "the list". Guess we will find out next year if this is true. I doubt it however, as the gentlemen who delivered the book, was not working from a list, and he also did not seem to understand English. Must be another one of those jobs that Americans wont do. But that's another story.
