We are finding it very interesting to watch this.

Yes I am. I've read a lot about TR in the past and find him a fascinating character. Haven't read as much about FDR and ER, but I will after watching this. As an aside, I have a dog named Teddy who is named after you know who.

I had read several books about Eleanor and Franklin but somehow didn't pay much attention in history class about the Teddy era. There are so many things that we both didn't know and find hearing and seeing Teddy Roosevelt on film makes it so much more .......understandable and riveting. History does repeat itself. But we are no longer as a nation, what we were then at the beginning of the last century, or in the middle of the last century.
I am going to look up more about the Tammany "bosses" today.

Try these...
This was great.....just finished and the author is so schooled in politics and the Presidency...
THE BULLY PULPIT....Doris Kearns Goodwin
Covers Teddy and his relationship with his WH successor Taft....great read on BOTH.
This is amazing....Teddy's trip down the Amazon was just incrdible...
"Roosevelt the Explorer....Teddy's Roosevelt's amazing adventures as a naturalist, conservationist and explorer"
By H Paul Jeffers
Great reads both of them

WUCF Channel 24, on Directv also channel 24, it's 24/7 in HD. I can't imagine Brighthouse, Comcast or Century Link not having WUCF from Orlando.
I saw a film about six months ago called "Hyde Park on the Hudson", from 2012. Bill Murry played FDR and it mostly covered a brief period of his life and his affairs. Murry did a really good job, but the story was pretty shallow.

You're right John. Comcast has WUCF. I watch it on channel 440 on HD.

Great show - but what else would you expect from Ken Burns and PBS!

There are two books that really cover almost all of the ground on the Roosevelt's.
"The Bully Pulpit" by Doris Kearns Goodwin. It covers TR and William Howard Taft and the rise of journalism in the 20th century.
"FDR" by Jean Edward Smith. It covers FDR from birth to death. It also explains a lot about Eleanor and her upbringing.
So far I haven't heard anything new in this special as the books are very thorough. Well, maybe one. TR was a progressive Republican and FDR was a progressive Democrat. They had a lot in common as I original thought they would be at opposite ends of the political spectrum. They both believed by helping the common man, was good government.
Another great job by Ken Burns by digging up all the photographs and interaction on the Roosevelt's.
BTW - Alice Roosevelt, (TR daughter), never like Eleanor, and was a thorn in her side all of her life. Stay tuned.

I met FDR, Jr in 1963 when he visited his son (FDR III) in Sasebo, Japan. Jr was undersecretary of commerce at the time, III was Exec of a coastal minesweeper in MineRon 3. Jr was very gracious and kind enough to talk with an awkward teenager (me). The III was loved by his men, in part because of a really good sense of humor.
The III went back to school after his Navy service and became an economics professor. His wife Jinx also teaches.

I belonged to the same Grange as Mrs Roosevelt in NY and also worked
at the Grocery Store where she shopped. She was a wonderful person. She
drove her own car, had no security around her and was embarased when the
Store Manager went with her as she shopped and helped her take things off
the shelfs. There was a "no tipping" policy at the store and when we carried
her bags to the car she would slip a dime or quarter on the seat as we loaded
the bags in her. She lived in the Val Kill Cottage a short miles away and you
can now tour it. It's too bad not all First Ladies are like her. At one time my
father was an officer at the Air Force Convlesant center in Pawling, NY. I was in the rec room and pounging away at the piano. She was visiting the base that
day, came in the Rec Room and saw me playing the piano. She sat down and played "Chop Sticks" with me and laughed. What a wonderful person.

I am recording it, stockpiling, and looking forward to some binge-watching soon.
Teddy's daughter Alice Roosevelt Longworth is interesting. I don't know how much she has been or will be covered by Burns in this, but if you are so inclined, give her a google
Alice was smart and beautiful and complicated and influential and scandalous. She carried a snake in her purse. Her father was quoted as saying, "I can be President of the United States or I can control Alice. I cannot possibly do both."
Alice was known for many things, including her sharp wit. Among her most famous quips -- "If you can't say something good about someone, sit right here next to me."

She lived in Cincinnati with her husband Nicholas Longworth.
I heard on this series that she said this about her father; "He must be the bride at every wedding, the corpse at every funeral and the baby at every christening".

Until the mid/late 50s, former presidents did not receive Secret Service protection and did not receive pensions.

It is fascinating. I had no idea the Roosevelt's had so much tragedy in their lives. Or that Eleanor had such an unhappy childhood.

Last summer we went to Canada, and stooped at Campobello, it is on display as it was years ago very interesting, what was surprising is it was not located in the US.
The movie Hyde Park on the Hudson with Bill Murry was very good.
I missed the first few episodes????

I am learning all kinds of interesting things. I thought Campobello was somewhere off the coast of Maine.
I am amazed by some of the things I have learned from this series. We felt that history would have been so much easier to learn if we had something like this available to watch and discuss when we were kids. It HAD to be diluted because Public Education can't get into the meat of history.
. Teddy was a Republican and Franklin was a Democrat and related, and at one time close. Both determined and dogged and savvy about people. Not above the faults of the world, but still admirable and very strong .
It shows that politics can bring out the best and the worst in people. And that history does repeat itself in this imperfect but beloved country.

At the end, I caught for a split second the actors' voices for reading quotes of the characters and saw Meryl Streep was reading lines for Eleanor. I can't imagine it is possible because there was no Meryl in the voice but I am pretty sure that is what the credits said. As I said, it was a split second and the other actors listed were top caliber. I need to really focus on that tonight.

Almost or kinda, you drive over a bridge from Maine, perhaps a 1/8 mile long go thru Canadian customs etc.
The island from Maine you can see right across a small channel of water.
You drive a mile or two to the house,

Meryl Streep did Eleanor voice, as she is the best actress of the most recent generation and great at dialects.
Paul Giammatti did TR's voice and Edward Herrman does the FDR voice.

It is a wonderful series. I love Ken Burns projects. I watched them all online earlier this week. I don't know how long it will be available online but for now if you missed an episode that may be an option.

Here you go, straight from WUCF:
GOING AWAY SEPTEMBER 28: A reminder: you can binge watch the *entire* THE ROOSEVELTS series from Ken Burns (PBS) -- but only until Sept. 28th -- on WUCF's website, on Roku and Apple TV! Catch up online now! The Roosevelts | Show Information | WUCF (http://www.wucftv.org/watch/shows/roosevelts/) #RooseveltsPBS
We have loved watching this program & have learned so much!
I am also currently reading "Upstairs at the White House My Life with the First Ladies" by J.B.West. This book has so much fascinating information about the different First Ladies & the operation of the White House. Mr. West was the Head Usher at the White House from the Roosevelts to the Nixons. It is an excellent companion to the PBS series.

The Burn's program on the three Roosevelts is great. Check also Joseph E
Persico's books on this era including the Centurion's, Lucy and Franklin and
several other outstanding books. Joe recently passed away, but was in TV last
Winter. His research is admirable, and l2 books "good reads".
