Have you capped off the living room floor outlet?

Has anyone capped off the living room floor outlet that comes with many of the homes? We are having new flooring installed in our Lantana and the installer has asked us if we want it covered over. We'd like to do this, as the outlet looks like a sore thumb with our furniture arrangement. My only concern is that the installer knows what he's doing with the electrical wiring.

If you contact home warranty, they should be able to tell you where to get the plans for your house. With these, you can have the installer and a suitable electrician confirm the wiring to this receptacle is disconnected at the source. I would go one step further, and have these wires labeled so a future owner knows what they were used for. I would strongly suggest that you do not just cap the wires and cover with flooring as this would typically be a violation of local codes.

Why not cover it with a rug?
At some point in time you may change the location of your furniture.
That outlet is a nice thing to have.

I'm a retired electrical contractor-my wife wanted the outlet gone. I removed the wire between the 2-3 way switches. We then had a tile contractor cover the now empty box with matching tile. It is never a good idea to cover any connection box or outlet with live wires in them.

Our home came with carpeting and when we replaced it with hardwood they worked around the outlet seamlessly.

We have arranged the furniture several ways. Some of them used the outlet, some didn't. But we are glad it's there when we want it and glad we didn't cover over it.

We found the floor outlet to be very useful as our furniture sits above it and the outlets are used to plug in lamps for our end tables. it all fits very well?

Most of the floor receptacles are able to be controlled from at least three switch locations. There would be two 3 way switches and a 4 way switch involved. Powered likely from one of the 3 way switches. These outlets are very desirable if you might ever sell.

Most building codes require any junction boxes to be easily assessable whether they are in the ceiling, a wall, or the floor. The only way to eliminate this floor box legally would be to remove or disable all of the active wires. If you can find the primary power source at the switch this could be easily accomplished by disconnecting the "hot" wire and safely capping the wire with a wire nut and electrical tape. Be aware, however, that some outlets are wired in sequence meaning that if there are 5 outlets on the same circuit and you disconnect for example #3 you could also lose power to #4 and #5. As others have said, I would seriously consider finding a cover for the box that does not attract as much attention and leave it alone. The advantage of having it there when needed more than outweigh the unattractiveness. Just set a potted plant on it and move on. Just kidding about the plant but you get the idea.
