A close friend who is hosting an exchange student from Finland asked me how likely it is that she (the exchange student) could get a golf scholarship for a US college. Emmi is a high school junior this year, an excellent student and has a 5.5 handicap. Oh yeah, she could only practice about 3 months out of the year as she lived in northern Finland.

Any suggestions of good schools which might offer a scholarship? While Pia (the sponsor) is currently living in Norfolk, VA, her husband is scheduled to be transferred in 2015 or 2016 to wherever the Coast Guard sees fit to send him next.

Thanks.

Golf scholarships are highly political. It's all who you know. Best choice is to go to the PGA show in ORL in January they have all the schools who offer PGM programs all lined up in a row. Good luck.

I don't want to rain on the parade but I suspect they are very competitive. The kids hoping to get one play all the time and compete in junior tournaments. The high school near where I lived in Seminole Florida basically told kids that unless they belonged to a country club and played several times a week, it was doubtful they'd even make the team. Many kids have private couches and/or attend golf camps. I know all this because my son played golf in high school. He didn't attend the neighborhood school but went to a magnet school where there weren't a lot of golfers and was able to play on the team. However, never hurts to try.
