Kind if stupid Lake County does not require a police officer to identify himself when knocking on a door at 1:30AM.

Agree kind of dumb not to announce yourself especially at that hour.

Wrongful-death suit against a Lake deputy could go to trial - Daily Commercial: News (http://www.dailycommercial.com/news/article_8ef1e2b3-a8a0-5dec-b15b-60d7efdc8f70.html)

Quick summary, police are looking for a man for assault (charges later dropped) and see his motorcycle in a parking lot. He lived next door to Mr. Scott. Did the police have his address and if not why not? It is 1:30 AM and Mr. Scott and his girlfriend are awake and watching TV. There is knocking on door but no announcement that it is the police. Fearing for his own safety and that of his girlfriend, Mr Scott gets his gun and goes to open the door. He only opens the door a crack while apparently remaining behind the door himself and points the gun outward at the unknown person who is knocking on his door at 1:30 AM per the police statement. The cop immediately, fearing for his own safety fires six times through the door itself killing Mr. Scott.

The lawsuit was initiated claiming excessive force ... It did not get to a jury trial as the judge ruled the cop had immunity to the claim. Apparently the rule in Florida is that if the cops do not intend to execute a search warrant and enter your home, they do not have to announce who they are when they pound on your door. Just stopping by for a chat on your stoop.

When anyone knocks on my door at that time of the night, I always have a gun in my hand before I answer the door. I just don't point it out the door.

If someone knocks on your door at 1 or 2 in the morning, I would call the police ASAP. They would be at your house in 2 minutes or less, with lights on. Coming from a family of cops ,I was told let them do their job.
