I hope my family and friends up north don't watch this show. My phone will be ringing off the hook and I'm not in the mood to defend TV all night. Although, I will if need be.

There's so many wonderful, beautiful, positive topics about living here and they had to pick this sleazy subject. Sex sells and it's pathetic.

I have met so many people in TV since living here for the past year.

None of them sleazy, sex crazed ( unless they are at home, but then knock yourself out ) or disorderly drunk. I know many single people and many couples. We are all just nice people. So let the show have their piece on First Edition and let all the folks up north think that we are all wild and crazy.:spoken:

I did too, Tippy. Mostly because of that idiot who wrote the book. He's just benefiting himself by putting down us seniors. Making us look sleazy and sex addicted. He hasn't a clue what its all about here. He probably worked on Inside Edition until they agreed to put on this piece, just so he could sell more books. He's probably rather see us all infirm and using walkers.

Well, good lord. Nine or ten people having drinks and lifting their glasses for the camera. A small handful of folks dancing on the square. The narrator did his best to hype it to the moon, but anyone watching would see nothing but a few people in their 60s-70s out and about at a local restaurant.

It is annoying that not a single person on the Inside Edition staff could be bothered to do a 30-second Internet search to find the correct demographics. Women do not outnumber men 10 to 1! Of course, Blechman is still sticking to his ridiculous story.

Some humorous posts here. Thanks for the laughs. But seriously, we didn't think the Inside Edition spot was that bad. Agree that the book author was just trying to make a buck for himself. We don't respect people who do not live here, yet pass judgment. TV is a beautiful, pleasant place to live with so many opportunities. Yes, they are just green with envy!

Yes, if given a choice between these two options, sexy is my pick as well.

In addition, the "lowest common denominator" type media is going to predictably be sensationalist to up their viewings, and what sells better than sex?

I agree. Like nobody's doing it in public places in the viewers' home cities/towns, in the car, park, hotel patios, etc.

The first place that non-story was blown out of proportion was the newer, online newspaper here, when they posted a "mug shot" of the woman. In any other newspaper from a city over 50,000, a mug shot would not be posted for something like that where the person was already apprehended and not harmful to others. Then online, it hit the national and international sites. Ridiculous.

I wonder if interest in TV has gone up or down in the last 48 hours? Whoever answers the sales calls, or requests for information on-line or otherwise would know. I wonder if book sales about TV have gone up or down too?

I don't think broadcasting 10 women to 1 man puts this place in a favorable light. I know it's not true but I wonder if older adults are saying to themselves "100,000 women and 10,000 men, that's not for me." That's what bothers me the most, not the sex, STD's or cheap booze Blue Shirt. [i stole Blue Shirt from someone :)]

I just want to have a great time down here with new friends and watch my real estate inflate so I can borrow against it and go traveling all over the world.

To see the falsehood in the 10 women to 1 man rumor, all we need to do is look up and down our street, and in the TV Phone Book that shows both residents' first names in their listings.

On our street that is 7 years old, 11 of 18 homes are occupied/owned by married couples (61%). All the singles are widowed, not divorced (some of the spouses died here in the last couple of years).

In 3 different pages of the TV Phone Book, I randomly opened and counted the marrieds and singles in the left hand column of each chosen page. There were 34 entries per column and 72-76% were married/couples with same last name.

Outsiders would do well to actually come and see and experience TV, and talk to people face to face, instead of believing tabloid gossip mongers and book authors that care nothing about the hardworking, decent people we are surrounded with in TV.

I don't put any stock in these so called experts, who interview a handful of people, and make the assumption the other 110,000, are the same way.
Their just trying to get their 10 minutes of fame.

When a serious researcher comes down and spends several years researching TV, then I would consider that a serious interpretation.

These hacks, called reporters/writers, are a discredit to their profession.

I just get tired of hearing so many misconceptions of the people, who live here!

Focusing on the bad apples, is what the media lives for!!!

When I first learned of TV, I mentioned it to my brother, he lives in Merritt Island, and told him that I would like to look at TV and was thinking about buying a house there for my retirement. This was about 2 - 3 years ago. He told me then that it had a very bad reputation for STDs among the retirees (he was snickering as he told me) and it put me off of wanting to live there. However, as I kept reading more about it, I became more intrigued and decided to come down and see for myself. Well, of course, I fell in love with the place. While I was on the lifestyle visit with my mother, my brother came up to stay with us for a couple of days, and what can I say, we ALL fell in love with it and the lifestyle and I am now a proud homeowner and my brother is very happy that I didn't listen to the gossip. He loves it also.

What was the name of the tabloid tv news show that was once anchored by David Frost and Bill O'Reilley? Inside Edition

This county by county spreadsheet from FL Dept of Health shows clearly the ignorance in that rumor. It shows numbers and percentages of STDs per county, and also the number/percentage co-infected with HIV.

The three counties of The Villages (Sumter, Lake and Marion) make us look like nuns compared to most others in the state.

See stats here:

The real story here is the out and out lies told to the president and vice-president of Sumter Singles. They made it very clear they would not participate if sex was the subject. They were told the point of the piece was to present the other side of the story--which was appealing since all people hear about lately is the sex stuff. The president had them in his house, took them to the softball fields to show him how important that is to people, spoke of the charitable efforts, volunteering, Learning College, and Charter Schools. None of that was mentioned. Again, they repeated and explicitly told them the would only participate if the other side was depicted. They are disgusted. And Inside Edition has taken down the link to that story despite having older stories still available. The thinking is they got inundated with comments refuting the story. You can still post on the page though. Of course, we all know Inside Edition is a tabloid, but with the assurances they gave, the expectation was that at least some of the good things would be depicted.

I don't suppose that Sumter Singles were able to get those promises documented. There is always a competing news organization more than willing to jump on a story like that. Although, that would ultimately generate more questionable coverage.
